Zero-Sugar Soju Does Not Mean a Lighter Hangover
Zero sugar describes sugar—not alcohol, intoxication or a hangover guarantee. Read ABV and bottle volume before trusting the front label.

Zero-sugar soju does not promise a lighter hangover. It tells you about sugar; the alcohol concentration and the amount you drink still drive most of the next-day risk.
The useful move is to read zero sugar, ABV and bottle size as three separate facts. One cannot stand in for the other two.
The word zero stops at sugar
In a 2024 test, the Korea Consumer Agency found no detectable sugar in five zero-sugar soju products. That claim was real. The catch was the comparison: ordinary soju in the test averaged only 0.12 g of sugar per 100 ml, already below Korea's 0.5 g-per-100 ml threshold for a sugar-free claim.
That detail had not reached many shoppers. In the agency's survey of 2,000 adults who had bought zero products, 68.6% expected zero-sugar soju to be substantially lower in calories than regular soju.
The front label makes the misunderstanding easy. “ZERO SUGAR” is prominent on the blue Jinro bottle, while a regular Chamisul bottle looks almost equally light and clear. These photographs are useful label cues, not current specification sheets: formulas and alcohol percentages change, so check the bottle in your hand.
The calorie saving is smaller than the label feels
The same Korea Consumer Agency test found that zero-sugar versions had 2.60 to 14.70 fewer kilocalories per 100 ml than the regular products used for comparison, a reduction of 2.85% to 13.87%. That is a difference, but it is nowhere near zero calories.
Most of the gap followed alcohol strength. The tested zero-sugar products were 0.5 to 2.6 percentage points lower in alcohol than their comparison products, and alcohol itself supplies energy. Removing a fraction of a gram of sugar cannot erase the calories in ethanol.
This is why the back label matters more than the halo around the word zero. If sugar is your concern, the claim is useful. If calories or tomorrow morning are your concern, start with ABV and volume.

Count the bottle, not the shot glass
A Korean restaurant may keep refilling tiny glasses, which makes a bottle feel like a long series of small drinks. The alcohol still adds up at bottle scale.
For a 360 ml bottle labeled 15.7% ABV, the arithmetic looks like this:
- 360 ml × 0.157 = 56.5 ml of pure ethanol by volume
- 56.5 ml × 0.789 g/ml = about 44.6 g of ethanol
- 44.6 g ÷ 14 g = about 3.2 U.S. standard drinks
The U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines one standard drink as 14 g of pure alcohol. Other countries use different units, so 3.2 is a comparison tool, not a universal serving rule. A 16% bottle lands at almost the same figure.
Use the formula with the current label instead of memorizing a brand number. Recent soju reformulations have changed ABV, and older photographs or reviews can quietly become wrong.

Sugar does not interrupt the hangover pathway
Your body converts ethanol to acetaldehyde and then to acetate. NIAAA describes alcohol as the main culprit in a hangover and lists mild dehydration, broken sleep, stomach irritation, inflammation and acetaldehyde exposure among the contributors. A zero-sugar recipe does not bypass that metabolism.
Individual mornings still vary. Food, drinking speed, sleep, medicines, body composition and genetics can change how a night feels. That variability is exactly why “this brand never gives me a hangover” is weak evidence.
One long r/korea discussion begins with a drinker asking why two 375 ml bottles at 20% felt worse than vodka. Replies blame everything from sweeteners to bottle color, often contradicting one another. The dependable clue is in the original numbers: those two bottles contained a large dose of ethanol, whatever the brand tasted like. Community stories reveal the question; they do not prove a special ingredient caused the result.

The practical choice at the table
Choose zero-sugar soju because you want the flavor or want to minimize sugar. Do not let the phrase justify an extra bottle. Before the first pour, check the ABV and 360 ml size, decide how much of that bottle you actually mean to drink, and keep track of the total rather than the number of refills.
Water and food may help with pace and comfort, but they do not cancel ethanol. NIAAA says no coffee, shower, supplement or morning drink cures a hangover; only time clears it, and keeping alcohol intake low is the reliable prevention.
There is no “zero-sugar” exception to alcohol impairment. Do not drive, ride a motorcycle or scooter, cycle in traffic, or operate machinery after drinking. If you are pregnant, under the legal drinking age, take a medicine that may interact with alcohol, or have a condition affected by alcohol, the safe decision may be not to drink; ask a qualified clinician about your own situation.
A person who cannot stay conscious, is vomiting repeatedly, has a seizure, breathes slowly or irregularly, or has clammy or blue-tinged skin may have alcohol poisoning rather than an ordinary hangover. Call local emergency services and do not leave them alone.
