Why Korean Rivers Turn Green in Summer
Heat accelerates cyanobacteria, but nutrients, light and slow flow complete the bloom. Learn how to read Korea’s alerts and tap-water advice.

A Korean river does not turn green simply because the day is hot. Heat speeds the growth of bloom-forming cyanobacteria, but severe blooms usually need four conditions at once: warm water, strong light, abundant nitrogen and phosphorus, and enough residence time for cells to collect near the surface.
That distinction is practical. One more hot afternoon is not a diagnosis. The better questions are what entered the water, how quickly it is moving, and what official sampling says. Government response details and public-health advice in this guide were rechecked on August 12, 2026.
The four-part recipe behind green water
The Korean term nokjo (녹조) describes visible green-water events often dominated by cyanobacteria, also called blue-green algae. A peer-reviewed review focused on South Korea identifies the recurring combination of light, temperature, nutrients—particularly nitrogen and phosphorus—and relatively still water. In the lower Nakdong River, regulated flow and low discharge helped determine when blooms peaked.
Heat is therefore the accelerator, not the entire fuel supply. Nutrients can arrive through treated and untreated wastewater, livestock waste, fertilizer and runoff. Slow flow gives buoyant cyanobacteria time to remain in the sunlit upper layer rather than being dispersed downstream.
Colour cannot identify the organism or toxin concentration. A vivid slick may contain different species from the next patch, while toxins can exist without a dramatic paint-like surface. These two photographs are non-Korean examples: they illustrate appearance only, not current conditions in Korea.
Drought helps blooms linger; rain can both flush and feed them
Dry weather reduces inflow and can slow a river or reservoir. Intense sun then warms the surface, while calm conditions give cells longer in the photic zone. That is why heatwave and drought often appear together in bloom reports: the weather amplifies a nutrient problem already present in the water.
Korea's first national seasonal algae-management plan runs from May 15 to October 15, 2026. It combines nutrient-source controls with monitoring and water-flow measures, including possible sequential operation of eight Nakdong River weirs after consultation and additional dam releases when conditions warrant. Flow would not be part of the toolkit if temperature alone explained a bloom.
Rain is not a simple cure. A large pulse can dilute and move surface growth, but runoff can also carry phosphorus, manure and other nutrients from land. K-water's July 27, 2026 response update described this sequence after heavy rain and prepared for renewed growth as hot weather returned. The useful rule is: judge the system after the storm, not the rainfall alone.
Read Korea's alert numbers correctly
The ministry reported 961 cumulative algae-alert days across 29 monitoring points in 2025, compared with 882 in 2024 and 530 in 2023. This is a site-day total. It does not mean 961 calendar days, nor that every Korean river stayed green continuously.
For 2026, forecasting expanded from nine locations to 13, and same-day alerts from four Nakdong locations to seven sites across several river systems. The plan aims to extend forecasting to all 28 drinking-water-source alert sections by 2030. For a present-day decision, use the Water Environment Information System and local environmental or utility notices rather than a viral photograph.

An alert is a management trigger. Operators may sample more often, adjust intake depth, operate barriers and removal equipment, and strengthen ozone or activated-carbon treatment. It is not automatically a notice that finished tap water in every connected home is unsafe.
Green source water and tap water are different questions
River water at an intake is raw source water; water from the tap has passed through a treatment system. Korea's 2026 response includes intake protection, more frequent monitoring and advanced treatment when conditions require. K-water also said it shares source-water data with local treatment plants.
That distinction is not a blanket guarantee. Performance depends on the plant, the compound and the event, and a local official advisory always overrides general guidance. A recurring Reddit discussion about Korean tap water shows how readily taste, building plumbing and cyanotoxin risk are mixed together, but those comments are anecdotes, not water-quality evidence.

If a utility issues a cyanobacteria or toxin advisory, follow its wording exactly. CDC prevention guidance warns that boiling water containing cyanotoxins does not remove the toxins and can concentrate them. Use the alternative water source named by local authorities until they lift the notice.
What visitors and residents should do
Treat scum, foam, discoloured water or paint-like streaks as a reason to stay out, not as a laboratory diagnosis. Do not drink untreated river or reservoir water. Keep children and pets away from posted bloom areas; animals may drink at the edge or lick contaminated water from fur. After accidental contact, rinse with clean tap water. If a person or animal becomes ill, seek medical or veterinary advice and mention the suspected bloom exposure.
The shortest accurate explanation is: summer heat opens the door, but nutrients and slow water let a bloom walk through it. Reducing risk requires managing the fuel and the flow, while current sampling—not colour alone—guides personal decisions.
