Hotel AC or Heating Not Working in Korea: What to Do
When hotel cooling or heating fails in Korea, identify the room controls, document settings and response, get a written repair time, then escalate to a tested room, the booking seller and a documented remedy. Leave immediately for smoke, CO, electrical or serious health danger.

If a hotel room in Korea will not cool or heat, stop pressing random controls and make a time-stamped, measurable request. Record the display, operating mode, setpoint, fan response and waiting time. Ask what system the exact room uses and whether the building is locked to a seasonal mode. Then obtain an engineering arrival time and a written deadline for the next decision.
Leave immediately for smoke or exhaust smell, a suspected carbon-monoxide alarm or symptoms, sparks, scorching, abnormal heat, active water near electricity, or a serious leak. Move to fresh air and call 119 for fire, rescue or urgent medical help. Do not wait for a room-change discussion. 112 is for police emergencies, not an ordinary facilities complaint.
First identify what you are controlling
A wall panel may control a fan-coil unit, while a separate remote runs a wall-mounted air conditioner. A floor-heating or 온돌 control may warm the floor without producing warm air. Some buildings use central heating or cooling that changes by season; others have individual heat pumps. A key-card power slot, open-window sensor, energy-saving occupancy sensor, clogged filter or fan-only mode can also explain why the display changes but comfort does not.
Only use controls intended for guests:
- Insert the room key in the power slot and check the master switch.
- Photograph the starting display. Select snowflake or 냉방 for cooling, sun/flame or 난방 for heating. Fan mode alone may not change temperature.
- Choose a reasonable setpoint and fan, note the time, close the exterior door and wait the period the hotel recommends.
- Close and latch a safely reachable window or balcony door; move luggage and curtains away from air grilles.
- Note whether air moves, whether it feels different from the room and whether a separately identified current-temperature value changes. A setpoint is not a thermometer reading.
Do not remove a panel, reset a breaker, turn a valve, touch a boiler, clean an unfamiliar filter, climb to an outdoor unit or access a roof. Never heat a room with a stove, kettle, hair dryer or other cooking appliance. Do not bring in an unverified portable heater, prop fire doors, block vents or cover a detector.
These three images show a useful sequence—room power, guest thermostat, then the actual unit or vent. The older wall unit in the final image is a hardware example from one hotel post, not a nationwide policy.
A current Korea Easy Guide explainer describes the card slot, master switch, control labels and property-specific seasonal operation. Use that as a vocabulary aid, not proof that every Korean hotel follows the same calendar.
Build a compact incident record
Capture one wide photo locating the control, one close photo of display/mode/setpoint/fan, the time of every change, and a short video showing airflow or lack of it. If you have an independent room thermometer, photograph it in a sensible interior location. Save the listed HVAC amenity and all staff messages.
Do not use a weather app as an indoor measurement. If the panel does not distinguish current from target, write “the display reads 29°C,” not “the room is independently measured at 29°C.” Record odors, sparks, water, alarms and symptoms accurately, but do not recreate a dangerous condition for a video. Keep room number, door code and guest identities out of public posts.

Ask the question that matches the hardware
At reception, distinguish central HVAC from an individual room fault:
- 중앙 냉난방인가요? — Is heating and cooling centrally controlled?
— Is cooling operating now?
— Is heating operating now?
— Can this room change modes independently?
— How is the floor heating controlled?
Ask whether the room has a separate remote, window interlock, filter or fan fault, and how long floor heating should take to show a change. If the entire zone is in one mode, another room in the same zone may not solve anything. Request a replacement whose needed system has already been tested, and inspect it before moving every bag.
Give the hotel an actionable deadline
State display, setting, elapsed time, vulnerability and requested outcome without exaggeration:
Room 1208's display reads 29°C. At 9:10 p.m. I selected COOL, 20°C and high fan. After 20 minutes, the display is unchanged and the vent air is not cool. Please tell me whether cooling is centrally disabled, send engineering, and confirm the arrival time. If the room is not working by 9:45 p.m., please offer a comparable or better room where cooling has been tested. We have a baby / older adult / relevant health need and cannot wait safely in this heat.
Korean to show on screen:
— The display reads 14°C. The room does not warm after HEAT at 24°C. Please offer a room where heating has been confirmed. These numbers are examples of documentation, not universal safety or compensation thresholds. Use your real reading and never invent a condition.
Escalate in the right order
- Front-desk troubleshooting: obtain a named action and time. Wait in a conditioned lobby or another safe area, not in a room causing symptoms.
- Technician or temporary comfort: accept an inspection with an arrival estimate. A hotel-provided fan, blanket or approved heater may bridge a short wait; it does not prove the advertised system works. Keep approved equipment clear of bedding, curtains, children and pets.
- Tested room change: request a comparable or better room and verify mode, noise, accessibility and air response before moving luggage. A room change is a request, not a guarantee.
- Manager and booking seller: ask the property to state what it cannot provide and the proposed relocation, rate adjustment or refund. If an OTA took the booking, open in-app support while still on site; the hotel controls the room, while the platform or seller may control payment and mediation.
- Documented consumer or card route: if no agreement is reached, keep the incident log, listing, messages and receipts. Ask the Korea Consumer Agency which route applies. A card dispute is a later formal process, not a threat to skip the hotel's chance to fix the service.
Do not cancel unilaterally or book an expensive replacement until the property or seller states the financial result, unless staying creates an immediate safety risk. Remedy depends on the delivered service, rate, channel and evidence; no fixed refund, price reduction or replacement is promised.
Separate the new room's room rate from deposits and card authorizations. Ask whether a preauthorization was released or a charge refunded, and retain cancellation receipts. If dynamic currency conversion is offered, verify the currency before accepting. Bank posting times and exchange differences are not controlled by the hotel. Never send a card number, passport, door code or OTP through a DM or payment link that you did not reach from the official platform.
A recent Reddit thread describes one property still in winter mode and later changing its setting; other travelers reported independent systems elsewhere. It is a prompt to ask property-specific questions, not evidence of a Korea-wide switch date.
Know the health and fire line
Heat illness can begin with heavy sweating, headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea or cramps and progress to confusion, slurred speech, seizure or loss of consciousness. Severe cold can cause intense shivering, exhaustion, fumbling, confusion, drowsiness or slurred speech; infants may show cold bright-red skin and unusually low energy. Move to a safer environment early, hydrate when the person is awake and able to swallow, and seek medical help. Confusion, collapse, chest pain, breathing difficulty, seizure, loss of consciousness or rapidly worsening symptoms require 119.
Pregnancy, infancy, older age, heart or respiratory disease, reduced mobility and medicines that affect temperature or hydration can reduce the safe waiting margin. State the actual need, not a diagnosis you do not have. Confirm a stable socket for CPAP or medical equipment and a suitable refrigerator for temperature-sensitive medicine; a minibar may not be designed for medical storage. If moving rooms, keep medicine and critical devices with the guest.
For musty odor, visible mold, heavy bathroom condensation or an active AC leak, document it and request assessment or another room. Do not open the unit. Water near electrics, sparks, scorch smell, a CO alarm or combustion odor means leave rather than troubleshoot.
Windows are a conditional fallback
Opening a window can bring outdoor heat or cold, fine dust, pollen, noise, insects and security or fall hazards. A screen prevents some insects; it is not a child-safety barrier. Check the opening limiter and keep children and pets away. Do not lean out, defeat a stop or climb onto a balcony to inspect an outdoor unit. Consider the current KMA warning and local air conditions before using ventilation as a temporary measure.
When accessibility, sensory needs or evacuation matter, ask whether the replacement uses the same controls, whether the elevator operates, and whether the route to the lobby is usable. A quieter room may be more important than a different floor; make the tradeoff explicit.
Before the next booking
Ask the property for the exact dates and room category:
- Is cooling or heating operating overnight?
- Is mode individual, central or floor heating?
- Does a window or occupancy sensor stop the system?
- Does the window open safely and have a screen?
- What happens if the system fails?
Save the answer with the rate and cancellation terms. If a same-day move becomes necessary, keep vulnerable guests in a safe staffed area while one adult handles messages. For a staffed luggage handoff, check the Delivery Spot map and confirm live intake and pickup times.
The sequence is: identify the system, check only guest controls, document response, obtain an engineering time, request a tested room, escalate through the seller, and leave immediately for 119-level danger.
