Can a Lost Item Be Shipped Overseas After You Leave Korea?

A found item can go abroad only when the office holding it agrees to release it to a courier or named representative. Many stations and police desks do not arrange international shipping. Call the custodian first, not the carrier.

1. Lock the holder and release rule

Get the report number, item description/photo, exact storage address, final collection date, required ID/authorization and a written answer: Will you release this item to DHL or my named representative? Airport, airline, rail, police and hotel rules differ; a LOST112 record does not override them.

2. Choose direct courier, proxy or holder shipping

Direct participating-location pickup reduces local handoffs when the holder approves it. Authorized person in Korea may work when courier release is refused but proxy collection is allowed; add local travel, packing and onward shipping. Holder-arranged shipping is simplest when expressly offered, but a domestic parcel option is not international delivery.

3. DHL’s airport route

DHL Express Korea’s lost-item service begins after a participating airport or hotel confirms the item and pickup permission. Current partner coverage announced for eight airports is Incheon, Jeju, Gimpo, Gimhae, Daegu, Cheongju, Muan and Yangyang. The owner reviews an estimate/customs points and signs request/authorization; DHL collects, packs, measures, creates shipping documents and sets the final charge.

The stated average two-to-three-day delivery is not a door-to-door guarantee; review, pickup and customs add time. 4. Copy proxy rules exactly

There is no national proxy form. Incheon publishes an owner-ID copy, proxy ID, registration number and advance proxy notice; SRT requires its form, owner ID copy/photo and proxy ID, and normally transfers property to police after seven days. Ask the exact holder about electronic signatures, ID masking, originals and the handoff address before sending anyone.

5. Price the complete shipment

There is no flat price. Count pickup, packing, chargeable weight/destination transport, optional insurance, destination duties/taxes and carrier/customs fees. Treat community totals only as examples. Approve pickup only after the packed estimate/final-charge method is clear; photograph condition and keep the claim, authorization, receipts and tracking.

6. Stop for restricted items and passports

Liquids, flammables, batteries, cash and food can fail acceptance. A phone is not automatically impossible, but its model/battery still needs carrier approval. Never remove, hide or misdescribe contents. A passport is not an ordinary parcel: contact the holder and your embassy/consulate. Incheon says foreign passports are held one month then sent to the relevant embassy.

Three written yeses complete the decision: the holder will release it, the carrier accepts the exact contents, and you accept the final cost plus destination charges. Until then, do not authorize collection.
