Lost Passport and Phone in Korea: A Recovery Plan

If your passport and phone disappear together in Korea, protect your safety and accounts first, report and search for the items second, then follow your own embassy’s document instructions. The plan works only when identification, money, accommodation details and sign-in recovery do not all live in the same bag or phone.

Before departure, split the recovery kit

Keep one pocket-size paper sheet away from the passport and main phone. Include the passport bio-page details, accommodation name and address in English and Korean, flight and insurance references, your embassy or consulate’s daytime and after-hours numbers, international card-issuer contacts, one trusted contact, and Korea’s key numbers: 112 for an urgent police emergency, 119 for fire, rescue or a medical emergency, 182 for police lost-property information, and 1330 for multilingual travel help. The 1330 service can explain travel services, but it is not an emergency line.

A passport copy can help establish details, but it is not a travel document. It does not guarantee that a mission will issue a replacement or emergency document immediately. Find your own mission before departure through Korea’s foreign-mission directory and save its current instructions separately.

Do not copy a card PIN, security code or full card image. Issuer name, support number and last four digits are normally enough to identify which card to block. Put a second passport copy, a different card and modest emergency cash in locked accommodation luggage or with a companion. Two copies in the same day bag are still one point of failure.

Test account recovery without the phone

An encrypted cloud packet can hold the passport bio page, itinerary, Korean address, insurance certificate, phone IMEI or serial number, carrier contacts and card-support numbers. Test it from a second device. If access immediately sends approval to the missing phone, it is not an independent backup. Protect the packet with its own strong access route, minimize the data inside it, and never add card PINs, security codes or ordinary account passwords.

Google backup codes are single-use, and generating a new set disables the old set. Store them away from the phone; never share one outside an actual Google sign-in prompt. Apple says iCloud.com/find can be used to mark an iPhone lost without entering a verification code, but Find My must have been enabled. Do not remove a missing device from Find My, because that removes Activation Lock. Google’s Find Hub can locate, mark lost or erase an Android device when the account, settings and available connectivity support the action; a location may be estimated or unavailable.

Give one trusted person the itinerary and limited instructions for the encrypted packet. They need the hotel address, embassy number, insurer reference and card-identifying details—not banking or email passwords. Police, an embassy, a carrier, accommodation staff or a person claiming to have found the phone does not need your password, one-time code, backup code or full card number.

Keep the phone number from becoming the only key

Record the carrier’s international lost-device number, account identifier, device IMEI and any customer PIN in a secure place away from the phone. Know whether your important accounts have another approved factor: a printed recovery code, passkey on a second device, hardware key or trusted device.

An eSIM does not remove the recovery problem. Suspension and replacement are carrier-controlled; identity checks, account access, a compatible device or a new activation process may be required. A saved QR code may not be reusable. Do not plan on restoring the same number within an hour. A spare unlocked phone can help on a long or work-critical trip, but it is optional and should not contain the only recovery material.

Keep a reserve card from another issuer, and if practical another payment network, plus a small amount of Korean won outside the daily wallet. This limits damage from one lost pouch without turning every bag into a store of valuables.

If both disappear, use this order

1. Get safe. Use 112 for a threat, assault, theft in progress or another urgent police emergency, and 119 for fire, rescue or a medical emergency. Routine misplacement without immediate danger is not an emergency call. Do not confront anyone or chase a device shown at an unfamiliar address.
2. Contain the phone and money. From a trusted borrowed device, mark the phone lost, ask the carrier to suspend the line, and block affected cards. If it is safe, preserve screenshots of the location, timeline and suspicious transactions first. Remote erase is a later, irreversible choice: depending on the device and platform, it can limit location access or data recovery. Weigh that tradeoff before erasing.
3. Report and search through the right channel. For routine loss, ask accommodation staff or a nearby police station, search LOST112, or call 182. For suspected theft or unauthorized access, contact police; use 112 when danger is immediate. Ask for a case or report reference when available. 1330 offers phone and real-time chat help; it can explain services but does not replace a police report, embassy decision or carrier identity check.
4. Contact your embassy or consulate. Follow that mission’s exact process for a replacement passport, emergency passport or other travel document.
5. Verify travel and immigration records separately. Once the mission confirms the new document type and number, check with the airline and every transit authority. A reissued passport requires a new K-ETA when K-ETA applies. An approved Korean visa or registered-resident record may require a passport-information update; confirm through the relevant official immigration channel or 1345. Nationality, status and document type matter, and an old passport copy, previous K-ETA, visa or police report does not guarantee boarding, transit, exit or entry.
6. Restore communication and funds without creating another breach. A carrier or eSIM provider may require identity checks and a new activation; neither timing nor immediate restoration of the same number is guaranteed. Contact the card issuer through an independently stored official number. Emergency cash or a replacement card depends on the issuer, network and location. Do not give an intermediary a password, OTP, recovery code or full card number.

Bring only what the mission asks for, which may include other identification, a police report, passport photo, itinerary and fee. An “emergency passport” is not a universal same-day product: eligibility, validity, permitted journey and proof differ by nationality. Before changing flights, ask the mission and relevant airline or transit authorities whether the proposed document is accepted for every border and connection. A foreign police report does not itself authorize travel.

Keep the police case number, carrier suspension confirmation, card-block records, document receipts and changed-flight or hotel receipts. Insurers and airlines may request different evidence, so preserve originals and screenshots without publishing personal data.

Run a ten-minute drill

Before flying, hand the phone to a companion and put the passport away. From another device, try to state the Korean accommodation address, open the encrypted packet, use one approved recovery route, find the carrier and embassy contacts, and access reserve money. Fix every step that depends on the missing phone.

The useful preparation is small: two separated paper packets, one tested independent sign-in route, one reserve payment path and a clear action order. It should reduce lockout, not create a folder containing every secret you own.
