What to Do When a Korean ATM Keeps Your Foreign Card
Freeze the card, photograph the ATM number and location, call the machine operator, then call your issuer. Recovery timing and return policy vary.

If a Korean ATM keeps your foreign card, freeze it first, photograph the machine details and call the operator printed on the unit. Then contact your card issuer. The operator controls the physical ATM; the issuer controls the account, cancellation, replacement and fraud process. Do not wait without a confirmed recovery time.
Before leaving the machine
Let any on-screen processing finish, then stop pressing buttons. Do not pull the slot, insert another card or accept a stranger’s help. Take a wide photo showing the station exit, store, hotel, branch or address, and a close photo of 기기번호/machine ID, operator logo, support number and error. Exclude your PIN, full card number, receipt details and bystanders’ faces. Save the receipt. Lock the card through the issuer’s official app or number.

Two calls, two different jobs
The ATM operator can say whether foreign cards are returned, who opens the unit, when they can arrive and where pickup happens. The issuer can keep the card locked, cancel/replace it, inspect pending cash withdrawals and handle unauthorized transactions. Bank-branch staff may identify an on-site machine during branch hours; staff near a station, hotel or convenience-store ATM may not control the safe.
Use the machine number in the call
Say: 외국 카드가 기기 안에 들어갔어요 (my foreign card is stuck); 기기 번호는 ___이고, 위치는 ___입니다 (machine number/location); 카드 회수가 가능한가요? 언제 기기를 열 수 있나요? (can it be recovered, when opened?); 여권을 가져가야 하나요? (bring passport?). Record the reference number and promised window. Traveler reports are examples, not guaranteed response times.
Recovery today is possible, not guaranteed
Wait only after the operator confirms the card is inside, return is allowed rather than destruction, an authorized person can open it before you leave, and your ID will be accepted. Bring the physical passport if requested; a photo is not automatically sufficient. Keep the card frozen until it is physically returned and the issuer agrees it is safe. Report a loose or altered slot to both parties. 1330 can help with travel information or language if service is available, but it is not the ATM operator or a financial hotline.

When recovery is later than your trip
If timing fails, tell the issuer the card is physically retained and ask whether to cancel it. Check recent and pending withdrawals and dispute unknown activity through official channels. Use a second card stored separately, a supported mobile wallet, or issuer emergency cash/replacement—not repeated attempts at the same machine. Keep photos, receipt, call log and reference number. Short version: freeze, photograph, operator, issuer, confirmed time.
