Hannam-dong Downhill Route: Leeum, BEAKER and Design

The low-effort way to combine Hannam-dong art, fashion, and design is to start at Leeum Museum of Art, the route's highest and most time-sensitive stop, then continue downhill to BEAKER Hannam and Chapter 1 Hannam. Budget 3.5–4.5 hours for the full outing. The walking between stops is about 1.2 km and roughly 20 minutes on the stair-avoiding options checked in Naver Map; museum time and browsing make up the rest.

This is a three-stop plan, not a promise of flat or step-free streets. Hannam still has slopes, crossings, and uneven approaches. If hills affect your visit, take a taxi to Leeum's entrance and use a live Korean map app for each downhill leg.

Keep the order even if you shorten the day. Leeum has the earliest opening, a weekly closing day, and the longest recommended stay; the two shops currently keep later daily hours.

1. Leeum Museum of Art — put the hill and the clock first

Leeum deserves the longest stop. Korean antiquities, changing contemporary exhibitions, the garden, and a three-architect campus make the buildings part of the visit. Before entering, compare Mario Botta's terracotta Museum 1 with Jean Nouvel's dark steel-and-glass Museum 2; Rem Koolhaas designed the adjoining child education and culture center.

2. BEAKER Hannam — compare several labels in one building

BEAKER works as the broad fashion stop: one multi-brand edit lets you compare silhouettes, fabrics, accessories, and lifestyle goods without turning the afternoon into a long showroom crawl. The selection includes Korean and international labels, so read the brand tag rather than assuming everything is designed or made in Korea.

• Stay: 45–60 minutes if you want to try items on; less if you are scouting labels rather than buying
• How to browse: Compare one category—outerwear, shoes, bags, or accessories—across brands before deciding. This keeps the stop useful even when the full selection is above your budget
• Price expectation: Hannam shopping generally leans premium. Come for curation and discovery, not outlet pricing

3. Chapter 1 Hannam — finish with rooms, objects, and materials

Chapter 1's current ground-floor space at Nine One Hannam is arranged more like a composed home than a souvenir shop. Furniture, lighting, textiles, tableware, and artist-made objects make it the clearest design stop on this route. Look at how color, light, and materials are grouped into room-like scenes before focusing on individual products.

• Price expectation: Many pieces sit at collector or premium-design prices. The store is still useful as a compact look at contemporary Korean retail styling

Before you go

• Choose the right day: This exact sequence works Tuesday–Sunday because Leeum closes on Mondays and designated holidays. If Leeum is closed, the two retail stops alone do not need a 3.5-hour plan.
• Protect your knees and time: Leeum's own directions describe about a five-minute uphill walk from Hangangjin Station after the main-road approach. A taxi to the entrance removes that initial climb; it does not make every later sidewalk step-free.
