Shipping a 20 kg Suitcase in Korea? Measure It First
Weight is only one gate. The finished package must also pass total dimensions, longest-side, packaging and one-person handling rules.

A 20 kg suitcase can still be refused in Korea. Weight is only the first gate: the service may also check the longest side, the sum of three sides, the finished packaging, the route and whether one person can handle the piece safely. The figures below were rechecked on 19 August 2026; confirm the booking page again before paying because coverage, cutoffs and capacity can change.
Start with the service, not the number on your scale
Domestic parcel networks and specialist luggage services solve different problems. Korea Post currently lists a maximum of 30 kg, a three-side total of 160 cm or less and a longest side of 100 cm or less. GS Postbox lists 20 kg or less with the same 160 cm total and 100 cm single-side ceiling, but it also requires a box or poly mailer. A rail-station or hotel-to-airport luggage service may use its own size bands, handover windows and eligible locations.
That makes “20 kg” a boundary, not an approval. Finish the packing before weighing and leave a little margin for a different scale. A reservation or price quote is not final acceptance until the operator sees the actual piece.
Measure the object that will actually be handed over
Measure the outermost points after protection is complete. Retract the telescopic handle, but count fixed handles, wheels, feet, locks, bulging pockets and any carton or cover that adds volume. If a provider gives a different measuring method, follow that provider’s current rule.
Write down five facts: actual weight, longest side, the other two sides, three-side total and package type. A 77 × 50 × 32 cm package totals 159 cm. The same case expanded to 77 × 52 × 35 cm totals 164 cm and misses a 160 cm rule even if it weighs only 19.5 kg. “28-inch suitcase” is a retail label, not a shipping measurement.
These two Korean travel posts show why staff may use a tape at handover, but they are anecdotes rather than policy: airport measurement example and expanded-case example.

Compare three service families
For a post office, read the current Korea Post prices and size limits and restricted-item list. The page notes longer delivery for islands and some regions, while weather can stretch ordinary-parcel timing. General parcels are not the same as registered parcels and do not carry the same loss compensation. Ask which product is being sold and keep the receipt.
At a convenience-store counter, the GS Postbox packing rules are decisive. An unboxed suitcase can be rejected even when its shell feels sturdy. Poor packaging, difficult handling, prohibited contents or an island route can also change acceptance, time or price.
Specialist luggage operators are a third category. ZIM Carry’s domestic same-day page separates reservation, hotel or locker handover and sequential arrival windows; as checked, its online cutoff, store drop-off time and hotel handover time were not identical. Its KTX and SRT service page applies the highest relevant size or weight band, while the KORAIL app luggage page has its own booking and collection flow. TripEasy’s service terms use another set of suitcase and box limits. Treat every number as product-specific, not as a nationwide standard.
Booking, acceptance and transit are three different clocks
A booking only reserves a request. The hotel still needs to agree to release or receive the bag, the name must match the stay, and the operator must accept the physical suitcase. Give the exact Korean address, local phone number, guest name, reservation name or number, and the time the desk can hand it over. Confirm that the destination is inside the service area and that both locations are staffed.
“Same day” usually contains several stages: booking cutoff, luggage-ready cutoff, actual collection, sorting and a delivery window. Capacity, traffic, weather, holidays, missed calls, an inaccessible building or a hotel that will not store luggage can disrupt any one of them. Do not promise yourself a fixed arrival just because the order screen accepted payment.
If the suitcase must meet a flight or train, build in a buffer rather than using the last possible service. Verify the final pickup time and the receiving desk’s closing time in writing. A traveler discussion about posting luggage within Korea and another about destination handover can help frame questions, but current operator and hotel answers override forum experience.

Pack for a logistics network, not for a hotel room
A suitcase lock does not replace the packaging a parcel carrier requires. Follow the selected service’s format: this may mean a sound carton, approved poly mailer, protective cover or a suitcase accepted as luggage. Secure loose straps, retract the pull handle, remove old airline labels and place a second contact label inside. Photograph all sides, the closed package, the contents and the measured dimensions before handover.
Keep your passport, cash, payment cards, securities, jewelry, irreplaceable documents and essential medication with you. Korea Post and GS publish broad restrictions on valuables, identification, fragile goods, liquids, perishables and electronics; the exact lists differ. Laptops, power banks and loose lithium batteries need explicit confirmation from the chosen operator, and a domestic booking should never be treated as permission for hazardous or airline-regulated contents. Do not hide an item to get around a rule.
Liquids, glass, ceramics, food requiring refrigeration and anything that may leak or contaminate another parcel are poor candidates unless the operator expressly accepts the item and its packaging. International shipping is a separate customs transaction: locks, declarations, food rules, batteries and duties must be checked for the destination and any transit country.
Tracking and compensation need evidence
Tracking may not begin until the bag is physically scanned. Save the booking confirmation, acceptance receipt, tracking number, declared value, photos and a simple contents list with purchase evidence for valuable-but-allowed items. Read the compensation cap and exclusions before booking; “insured” does not mean every item or every type of damage is covered.
Ask what happens after a failed pickup or delivery: redelivery, return, station or warehouse storage and extra days can carry fees or deadlines. Never send the only copy of a document or the key needed to open the bag inside the same shipment. If an operator may need inspection access, agree on the lock procedure before handover.
A 20 kg bag is also a lifting problem
Twenty kilograms may be within a tariff band and still be awkward on stairs, across a wet pavement or into a small counter. Do not lift it alone if that is unsafe. Use a trolley or elevator, split the load, or arrange a service that can handle the route. Do not leave luggage in an exit path, on stairs or where staff must make a risky lift. Korea Post also flags items one person cannot carry and difficult-to-pack shapes; that judgment remains separate from the numerical maximum.

The five-minute check before you pay
- Measure the fully protected exterior and record all three sides, their total and the longest side.
- Weigh the finished package with a margin below the published ceiling.
- Confirm the exact route, hotel or station, booking cutoff, handover window, operating day and capacity.
- Ask which packaging format is accepted and whether a suitcase needs a carton or cover.
- Remove documents, money, valuables, essential medicine, restricted electronics, batteries, liquids and fragile or perishable items.
- Keep photos, a contents list, receipt and tracking number; read compensation and storage terms.
- Obtain hotel approval at both ends and provide an exact address, reachable phone number and matching guest details.
- Leave enough time before checkout, a train or a flight to recover from a refusal or delay.
