How Much Extra Time Does a Suitcase Add to a Seoul Subway Transfer?

The same-route model
Seoul Metro's transfer-distance dataset calculates its published time by dividing corridor distance by an ordinary walking speed of 1.2 m/s. To compare the same physical route with luggage, this guide uses 0.9 m/s as a conservative planning input. It is a model, not a claimed citywide average or a fabricated stopwatch result.
The extra time is distance × (1/0.9 − 1/1.2). Conveniently, that is about one extra second for every 3.6 metres of corridor.

The 0.9 m/s scenario makes corridor movement one-third longer than the official baseline. If you know your own comfortable speed with a bag, substitute it in the formula; the station distance stays the same.
What the corridor does not capture
Wayfinding, vertical movement, crowds and waiting for a lift are absent from the calculation. The two images below come from one traveler's December 2025 Seoul Station walkthrough, which documented an escalator-led KTX-to-Line 4 route taking about five to six minutes. This serves as station context only; the 0.9 m/s assumption still comes from the planning scenario above.
The useful detail is the sequence: identify the correct line signs before descending. A wrong vertical move can erase more time than the corridor penalty. If you cannot hold the bag securely on an escalator, follow the signed lift route.
Elevators are a separate variable

By December 2025, all 338 Seoul subway stations had at least one elevator-based step-free path between street and platform, according to Seoul's accessibility update reported by Hankook Ilbo. That does not mean every internal platform-to-platform transfer follows the shortest corridor.
The same update identified 13 stations for internal transfer improvements. At those stations, Seoul estimated an average transfer of 23.3 minutes for accessibility users versus 7.8 minutes for general users, with planned reductions to 9.8 and 4.3 minutes respectively. Those are accessibility-program averages, not suitcase timings. They show why a lift-dependent trip should not be folded into a universal “add two minutes” rule.
For a repeatable real-world test, time three parts separately:
- Corridor movement: from the first transfer sign to the next vertical-movement point.
- Vertical movement: escalator ride, or elevator detour plus the actual wait.
- Navigation and crowd delay: wrong turns, queues and blocked passages.
Use the same station pair, direction and time window for both runs. Walk normally—do not race—and keep train waiting time outside the comparison. That produces a result another traveler can understand instead of one unexplained total.
A practical planning rule
For a known level or escalator transfer, add one second per 3.6 metres to the operator's corridor time when using the 0.9 m/s suitcase model. If a lift is essential, add its detour and wait as a separate contingency; there is no honest citywide number for that part.
In one KoreaTravel subreddit discussion, a traveler described the subway as doable with some handling, while other commenters recommended a taxi to avoid stairs and crowds before a timed KTX connection. These are firsthand judgments, not performance data. For an important airport or rail departure, arriving one train earlier is safer than trying to predict a lift queue to the minute.
When carrying the bag is the wrong problem

If a long transfer is only a bridge between checkout and a later train, storage or station-to-station delivery may remove the suitcase from the journey. Seoul's current subway storage facilities page lists T-Luggage locations, service steps and prices; check it on the travel date because counters and fees can change.
The short answer remains: the suitcase itself adds roughly 20 seconds to 1 minute 38 seconds across the example corridors. Elevators, navigation and crowds create the wider—and less predictable—gap.
