Plus-Size Travel in Korea: Seats, Clothes and Jjimjilbangs

Most plus-size travelers can use Korea’s transport, shops and bathhouses without changing the itinerary. Preparation becomes useful at four specific contact points: fixed armrests, a train’s actual seat layout, garment measurements and the sauna uniform issued by a jjimjilbang.

Treat these as equipment questions. “Is there a chair without arms?” or “What is the largest uniform today?” gives staff something concrete to check; asking whether an entire place is “plus-size friendly” rarely does.

Body size and social treatment are separate questions

Accounts from travelers are mixed. In one r/koreatravel discussion, several repeat visitors said size had seldom affected their trip, while others recalled staring or direct comments. A separate clothing-shopping thread focused much more consistently on short size runs, garment length and unfamiliar proportions.

Neither thread is a national survey, and neither predicts how a stranger will behave. They are useful for identifying practical friction. A rude remark is unpredictable; a bolted stool or a jacket measured in centimeters can be checked before money changes hands.

Choose the seat, not a reassuring vehicle label

Subway cars usually have long bench seats, but there is no one published width covering every line, carriage, divider and end pole. Look at the car in front of you. An end position may feel less enclosed, and letting a packed train pass can be more comfortable when the next service is close. Priority seating remains reserved for passengers who need it; it is not general extra-room seating.

For intercity travel, use the live seat plan for the exact departure. A 2+1 coach provides a single-seat side; a 2+2 coach does not. Train and express-bus models vary, so an old fleet photo is weaker evidence than the map attached to the ticket you are buying.

At a café or barbecue restaurant, the difficult option is often a booth, a stool fixed to the floor or a chair with solid arms. Ask before everyone sits down:

If the table is fixed close to a bench, point to the alternative chair. The furniture is the problem to solve; no explanation of your body is required.

In clothing shops, centimeters beat conversion charts

Measure a garment that already fits, laid flat, and keep the figures on your phone. Compare those measurements with each product page instead of forcing one US, UK, EU or Korean conversion across different brands.

These Korean labels unlock most size charts:

• 어깨 — shoulder
• 가슴단면 — chest width measured flat
• 허리단면 — waist width measured flat
• 엉덩이단면 — hip width measured flat
• 총장 — total length
• 소매길이 — sleeve length
• 밑위 / 허벅지단면 — rise / thigh width measured flat

When a chart says 단면, compare it with the flat width of your own clothing. Doubling the figure gives only a rough circumference; stretch, lining and intended ease still affect the fit. “Free size” simply means one size is sold. It is not a promise that every body fits.

For search, try 빅사이즈 여성의류 for women’s plus-size clothing, 빅사이즈 남성의류 for men’s, or 큰옷 more broadly. Tall travelers should check total length, sleeve length, rise and inseam even after the chest or waist works. Shoe listings use millimeters, so search by your measured foot length rather than a familiar letter or regional number.

Men’s retailer 4XR shows product-specific filters from M through 8XL on current items and publishes its own offline-store page. These are search leads, not universal conversions or stock guarantees.

There is a time-sensitive detail for 4XR’s Seongsu shop. Its official notice says the current location operates through September 23, 2026, pauses September 24–30, pre-opens at the new address October 1–2, and has a grand opening on October 3. Recheck the same store page before crossing Seoul; product and branch stock can change independently.

At a jjimjilbang, check the issued uniform before paying

A mogyoktang is the gender-separated wet-bath area, where nudity is expected and no sauna uniform is worn. A jjimjilbang adds shared dry rooms and common lounges; visitors normally wear the T-shirt and shorts issued at reception in those mixed-gender areas. Ask before paying:

If the largest set does not fit, do not assume personal clothing is accepted:

제 티셔츠와 반바지를 입어도 될까요?
May I wear my own T-shirt and shorts?

Uniform stock and house rules differ by facility. A phone call or desk question on the day is more reliable than a universal size chart.

The room layout matters too. Wet areas often use low washing stools; lounges may have floor mats, low tables or molded recliners. If sitting on the floor is difficult, ask 의자 있는 공간이 있나요?—“Is there an area with chairs?” A suitcase may not fit the standard locker, so confirm large-bag storage separately before arriving.

You do not need to apologize for any of these requests. Ask about the object in front of you—the single seat, flat measurement, arm-free chair, larger uniform or chair-height resting area—and make the decision from the answer.
