How to Ask for a Korean Men's Haircut: Down Perms, Parts, and Styling

Ask for a shape you can reproduce after shampooing, not an “oppa haircut.” Bring front, side and back photos of one consistent style, then state how open you want the forehead, where the sides stick out and how many minutes you will really style each morning. The salon blow-dry is temporary; the cut and chemical work must still make sense at home.

Decide the silhouette before the service name

• Fringe down: a dandy or see-through dandy shape is the easiest starting point if you prefer some forehead coverage.
• Parted: a 5:5, 6:4 or 7:3 part needs enough top length and a drying direction that works with your natural part.
• Lifted: a regent or defined comma shape exposes more forehead and normally asks for more deliberate drying, heat or product.
• Sides controlled: a soft two-block decides the cut; a down perm is an optional chemical service for hair that springs outward.

Four terms to separate clearly

Two-block and soft two-block

A two-block leaves more length and weight on top while the sides and lower back are cut shorter. A soft two-block blends the boundary more gradually. Show the stylist whether the ear should be exposed, partly covered or covered, and how neat or long the neckline should remain.

If you dislike a hard undercut, point at the transition in your reference and ask for “soft and blended, with no obvious disconnect.” Millimeter numbers alone do not describe the weight line above the ear or the shape at the back.

A 5:5, 6:4 or 7:3 part

The ratio describes the intended balance: 5:5 is centered, while 6:4 and 7:3 place more volume to one side. It cannot override the direction in which your roots grow. A Korean barber's professional explanation shows one face-specific example: for a longer face, the stylist preserves useful side weight, presses only the areas that project outward and avoids making the top look unnecessarily taller.

That example is not a universal face-shape rule. Ask which part your hair can hold after washing and whether the proposed side control changes the balance you want.

Down perm

A down perm uses a chemical perm product to make outward-growing side or back hair sit closer to the head. It is separate from the haircut. It does not create top volume, a center part or waves on its own.

Ask where the product will go: sideburn area, above the ears, lower back, or a combination. If your sides already lie flat, you like some width, your hair is fragile from previous chemical work, or your scalp is currently irritated, tell the stylist before agreeing. Growth and individual hair behavior change how long the visual effect lasts, so another person's repeat schedule is not your deadline.

Parting, volume and texture perms

A parting perm establishes direction around a center or side part. A volume or wave perm adds lift or movement on top. A salon may combine one of these with a down perm, but the products are solving different areas. Confirm whether the booking is cut only, cut plus down perm, or cut plus down perm and a top perm, and ask whether shampoo and final styling are included.

Build a reference set the stylist can use

Book enough time, then confirm the live quote

The thread is anecdotal; its prices and individual recommendations are not current quotes. Send the reference set first, then ask for the booked service name, expected door-to-door time, price range, deposit, cancellation rule and consultation language in writing.

Treat a down perm as chemical work

The American Academy of Dermatology's dermatologist-reviewed perm guidance states that perming can leave hair dry and brittle. It also advises rinsing perm solution immediately and consulting a dermatologist if excessive stinging or burning occurs. Tell the stylist about scalp irritation, broken skin, a previous reaction and recent chemical services before product is applied; do not accept severe burning as a normal sign that the perm is working.

A current Korea Tourism Organization Jennyhouse listing separates “Haircut+Styling” and “Perm” in its specialty menu. That is one venue example, not a nationwide naming rule, but it reinforces the booking question: confirm each included service rather than assuming “men's haircut” includes a down perm.

Ask to see the home version before leaving

The polished finish can conceal the daily effort. Ask the stylist to demonstrate:

1. the drying direction for the fringe and part;
2. how to press the sides or lift roots with your fingers;
3. the smallest amount of product that holds the shape;
4. what the hair looks like without wax or a straightener;
5. which part needs a trim or repeat service, and when the stylist suggests reassessing it.

If the stylist agrees, record a short hands-only demonstration. Recreate the method with the tools you actually own. A style that needs a round brush, straightener and two products is not a five-minute routine unless you already use them comfortably.

Lead with the desired forehead, side and neckline shape. Use matched front, side and back photos. State your real morning routine, then let the stylist decide whether the cut alone can achieve it or whether a targeted down, parting or volume perm has a useful job.
