Don’t Use a Korean Italy Towel Every Day

The visible gray rolls can feel satisfying, but daily friction can leave skin tight, itchy, red or sore. Use the softest towel lightly, let skin recover and know when to stop.

Do not use a Korean Italy towel—or an exfoliating ddae soap followed by the towel—every day. Both cleansing and friction remove material from the surface. Repeating before the skin feels normal can cause tightness, itch, redness, soreness or dark marks without making you cleaner.

Gray rolls are a by-product, not a cleanliness score

Warm water and firm strokes can produce gray rolls, which online discussions sometimes turn into a challenge. Two Reddit threads include both satisfying results and scraped, irritated skin. They are individual experiences, not dermatology evidence. The rolls contain surface material; a larger pile does not prove more dirt.

A small, older Korean rough-towel study found a measurable temporary response after a single scrub, including reduced water-holding capacity and later transepidermal water loss; its chronic phase did not find the same barrier changes, though turnover increased. It does not prove permanent damage from one session. A 2020 laboratory study found rubbing-related cell damage and higher permeability with more rubs and load. Together, they support restraint—not a universal ban.

Use recovery, not a rigid calendar

The American Academy of Dermatology says frequency depends on skin and method: the more aggressive the exfoliation, the less often it should be done. A consumer guide suggests no more than once weekly as a starting ceiling for this mitt, but many people need less and some should skip it. Do not scrub again while skin is tight, tender, itchy, unusually dry, red, or stings when lotion is applied. Avoid the face, genitals, sunburn, cuts, inflamed bumps and active rash. Ask your dermatologist first if you have eczema, another skin condition or a treatment plan.

Color is not a universal strength code

The images show one manufacturer’s mild 40 and stronger 70/80 labels. Another brand can use the same color for a different texture. Choose the softest towel that glides in short, light strokes. Stop with persistent stinging or burning even if no rolls appear.

Do not stack every exfoliator

There is no standardized formula for “ddae soap.” Read the ingredients and directions; if it loosens dead skin or contains acids, grains or peeling ingredients, count it as exfoliation. Do not combine it with a rough towel, body scrub and acid lotion in one session. The AAD also warns that exfoliating while using retinoids, retinol or benzoyl peroxide can worsen dryness or breakouts. Separate shaving, waxing and professional seshin from the scrub. A Korean clinic’s shower guide advises lukewarm water and avoiding forceful rubbing.

Use a few light passes, rinse with lukewarm water and moisturize immediately while skin is slightly damp. Wash the towel, dry it fully and never share it. Hands and a mild cleanser are enough for daily washing. Stop and seek care for severe or persistent burning, cracks, swelling, oozing, spreading rash or discoloration. An Italy towel is an occasional treatment, not a daily proof of cleanliness.
