How Far Does “Idol Retouching” Go at Korean Photo Studios?

“Idol retouching” has no standard strength. It can mean clean light and temporary blemish correction while preserving structure, or a live edit with visible changes requested by the customer. Choose the studio and edit level together.

Separate the services before booking

A package may separate shooting, selection, retouching, hair/makeup and delivery. In many menus, “1 cut” means one selected final retouched image—not one shutter press. Ask how many final cuts, whether you approve beside the editor, and whether makeup or personal-colour work is a different booking. Current studios illustrate both subtle structure-preserving edits and optional one-to-one Photoshop; neither is a universal Korean default.

Define what may change

Before editing starts, divide temporary cleanup—blemishes, stray hair, lint, uneven light—from structural change—jaw width, eye size/alignment, nose, hairline, neck or shoulders. For a restrained result say: 제 얼굴이 알아볼 수 있게 자연스럽게 보정해 주세요. 얼굴형과 이목구비는 크게 바꾸지 말아 주세요. Ask to see normal-size print preview as well as zoom.

Hair and makeup happen before Photoshop and may be a separate service. Confirm location, preparation time, lashes and hair scope. With sensitive skin or allergies, disclose them and agree on products first. A fun portrait can be highly styled; an official photo must remain recognizable and follow the receiving authority’s current rules.

Official documents are a different product

Korea’s official passport rules, checked 12 August 2026, require the actual holder without arbitrary software, filter or AI alteration, and reject edited/composited/generated content and digital background removal or replacement. The Korean specification includes a 3.5×4.5cm print, 3.2–3.6cm head length, uniform white background, front-facing head/shoulders, closed mouth and a photo within six months. Cosmetic/coloured/circle lenses are prohibited and the facial outline must remain visible.

Rules vary by country and document. The U.S. passport authority also requires an original, unedited image without filters or digital alteration. A Korean passport, foreign passport, visa, residence application, licence, student card and résumé are not interchangeable; the receiving authority, not the studio, decides acceptance.

Order two named versions

Order official_original: captured, framed and delivered to the current authority specification without facial alteration, plus the unedited source if supplied. Order idol_retouched separately for skin, colour, background or requested feature changes. Do not later stretch or recolour the official file. If a studio cannot work from the current checklist, use it only for the fun portrait.

Confirm files, revisions and face-image use

Before payment, get the final-cut count, original-shot policy, pixels/file type/size, print sizes and copies, background options, revision count, delivery time and retention period. Also ask whether the studio deletes or retains face files and whether it may post your image. Booking a shoot is not blanket consent for portfolio or social reuse. Save official and personal files in separate folders immediately.
