How to Read Expiration and PAO Dates on Korean Cosmetics

Learn which Korean cosmetic label marks the manufacture date, the fixed use-by date, and the period after opening—and what to do when a batch code is the only marking you can find.

On Korean cosmetics, 제조일자, 제조, MFG, or MFD identifies when the product was made; it is not the expiry date. 사용기한, 까지, or EXP gives a fixed use-by limit. 개봉 후 사용기간 or an open-jar mark such as 12M starts from first opening. When two limits apply, use the earlier one.

That reading is safer than memorizing a generic “three-year shelf life.” Korea's Cosmetics Act requires the relevant package to carry a use-by date or a period after opening; if PAO is used, the manufacturing date must also be shown. We rechecked that rule against the current Korean Article 10 on August 12, 2026. The label and storage instructions on the exact product still control.

Read the word before the number

  • 제조일자 / 제조 / MFG / MFD: manufacture date. 제조 2025 05 05 means made May 5, 2025.
  • 사용기한 / 까지 / EXP: fixed use-by date. 2028.05.09까지 means use by May 9, 2028 when stored as directed.
  • 개봉 후 사용기간 / 6M / 12M / 24M: period after opening. 12M means 12 months from first opening.

Korean labels commonly use year-month-day, separated by dots, slashes, or spaces. Do not decode an unlabeled 250509 from sequence alone. Find the nearby word first.

Where the marking hides

Start with the carton, then inspect the container you will keep: bottle base, jar bottom, tube crimp, pump collar, back label, foil seal, and end flap. An import sticker may hold the Korean information even when the original pack uses English abbreviations.

In the first slide, 제품 사용기한 2027/12 is the product's use-by month, not its manufacture month. Faint ink on a clear base may appear only under side light. If the box and container seem to conflict, photograph both and ask the brand or authorized retailer what each code means; do not simply choose the later date.

PAO begins at first opening

An open-jar 12M does not mean 12 months from purchase or manufacture. Mark the day you first opened a slow-use product. If a product says both 사용기한 2027.12.31까지 and 12M, opening it July 1, 2027 does not extend use into 2028: the fixed December 31 limit arrives first.

Pumps, jars, droppers, cushions, and single-use pouches face different exposure. Do not replace a product's own label with a blog rule such as “all toners last X months.” Follow any more specific brand instruction.

A lot number is not a universal date

제조번호, LOT, or a short alphanumeric string identifies a production batch. A maker may encode a date internally, but there is no universal shopper decoder. Third-party checkers may use an obsolete pattern, miss the brand, or mistake a non-date code for a date.

Community questions about manufacturing dates, expiry dates, and PAO show how common the confusion is, but individual replies do not override the label or a brand's written answer. If you find only a code:

  1. Recheck carton, base, crimp, seal, and Korean sticker under good light.
  2. Photograph the full product, code, and barcode.
  3. Ask official customer service to identify it using product name and lot number.
  4. If an old, opened, or secondhand product cannot be verified, do not guess.

Storage can shorten practical life

The legal use-by concept assumes appropriate storage. Heat, sun, repeated bathroom humidity, contamination, and a loose lid can damage quality earlier. Use clean hands or the supplied applicator and follow the package's storage line.

Stop early for a new odor, color change, swelling, gas, mold, unexpected separation, or a new skin reaction. A future printed date does not rescue a visibly changed product; a normal appearance does not override an elapsed date.

The decision rule is simple: identify the label word, interpret the date in that context, record first opening, and obey the earlier limit. If all you have is a lot code, ask the brand rather than trusting an unverified converter.
