Korea During Seollal or Chuseok: What to Lock, What to Replace

You can travel well in Korea during Seollal or Chuseok, but only if you separate two risks. Intercity transport is the hard constraint; venue and restaurant hours are the flexible layer. Confirm the train, SRT, express-bus or flight first. Then build each day from two nearby options whose dated holiday notices you have checked.

For 2026, the public-holiday blocks are February 16–18 for Seollal and September 24–26 for Chuseok. Seollal Day was February 17; Chuseok Day is September 25. The dates move every year with the lunar calendar, so use the current VISITKOREA public-holiday calendar, not last year's itinerary.

Decide from your route, not from the word “holiday”

The same holiday can create a quiet commercial street in Seoul, a sold-out station, a jammed expressway and a crowded free-admission palace at the same time. Many residents travel to family homes outside the capital; that movement concentrates demand at rail stations, bus terminals, airports and highways. Small businesses may close while convenience stores, hotel facilities and some large chains continue on adjusted hours.

Ask one question before booking: Must I change cities during the holiday block?

• No: staying in one city is the lowest-risk plan. Keep meals and attractions replaceable.
• Yes, with a confirmed ticket: protect the departure window and plan little immediately before it.
• Yes, without a ticket: change the route or add a night. A rental car is not a reliable escape from holiday traffic.

What is actually closed

Government offices and banks close on public holidays. Independent restaurants, cafés, traditional-market stalls and shops decide individually; the main holiday day is the highest-risk date, but there is no nationwide rule that every small business closes. Department stores, malls and supermarkets may close for a day or shorten hours, and branches of the same brand can differ.

Attractions also publish separate plans. A venue may open throughout the holiday and take a substitute closure afterward; another may close only on Seollal or Chuseok Day. “Normally open on public holidays” does not override a dated holiday notice.

The 2026 Seollal travel notice is a useful example, not a reusable annual schedule. It said many national museums would close on February 17 while operating on surrounding dates, and that major royal sites would open free during the extended holiday. The royal-site authority later confirmed free access from February 14–18, excluding Changdeokgung's Secret Garden, followed by a February 19 closure.

For Chuseok 2026, do not copy those Seollal arrangements. As of August 12, the national holiday dates are published, but the dated venue and transport notices used for this guide have not yet established one common Chuseok operating plan. Recheck the actual palace, museum, shop and carrier notice once it appears.

What usually remains usable

City subways and buses continue operating, and taxis still run, though waiting times and schedules can change. Convenience stores, hotel restaurants and businesses in major visitor districts are often the easiest fallbacks. “Often” is not a promise: confirm the exact branch on its official site, booking page or phone listing.

Outdoor sites are useful only after the dated notice is clear. During Seollal 2026, the four grand palaces, Jongmyo Shrine and the Joseon royal tombs opened free, while the next day became a substitute closure. This is precisely why a current notice matters.

Lock intercity transport before anything else

Holiday allocations do not follow the normal “buy whenever the regular window opens” assumption. Operators can announce a separate reservation period, route-specific sale times, member-registration deadlines and sales channels. A sold-out special allocation may later produce cancellations, but that is not a plan.

For Seollal 2026, KORAIL used a dated holiday notice and online reservation process for the special travel period. Keep the KORAIL English notice page as a past example only; its dates do not govern Chuseok. Watch the current notices from the operator you will actually use, including SRT or the express-bus platform where relevant.

Use this order:

1. Fix the city sequence and the traveler's names exactly as required by the operator.
2. Note the holiday sale announcement, account requirement and Korea Standard Time.
3. Buy the intercity segment before committing to timed attractions or nonrefundable rooms.
4. Save the ticket and a realistic station-arrival buffer offline.
5. If unsuccessful, change the city order or stay an extra night before adding risky connections.

Build one fixed day and two replaceable days

Day before the main holiday: Stay in the departure city unless the intercity journey is ticketed. Collect prescriptions and essentials, confirm the next two days' hours, and reserve the one meal that would be difficult to replace.

Main holiday day: Use a palace, park, riverside walk or cultural program only when its dated notice confirms access. Keep a hotel restaurant, convenience store or verified large-chain branch as the meal fallback.

Another holiday day or the day after: Check for substitute closures. An attraction that welcomed holiday visitors may close immediately after the official block.

If hotel checkout overlaps with a holiday departure, leave bags with the hotel or use a confirmed Delivery Spot luggage location near the station you will actually use. Do not carry luggage through unverified stops. For an Incheon arrival, compare the simplest airport-to-Seoul options before accepting a late connection.

Recheck at three moments

• When dates are fixed: follow the operator's holiday-sale notice and secure intercity transport.
• Seven to ten days before: verify major attractions and reserve any meal with no easy substitute.
• Twenty-four hours before: recheck the exact branch or venue and save two open-air alternatives in the same area.

Community reports can reveal the pattern—chains and transit available, some small restaurants closed—but cannot verify today's branch hours. A quiet Seoul neighborhood does not mean the station will be quiet; a crowded palace does not mean every shop is open.

The practical answer is therefore simple: keep the city fixed unless transport is confirmed, and keep everything inside the city replaceable. That turns Seollal or Chuseok from a shutdown problem into a notice-checking problem.
