Why Korea’s Cherry Blossoms, Changma and Fall Colors Keep Moving
Korea’s seasonal calendar is shifting, but climate change does not move every cherry blossom, rainy spell or autumn leaf in the same direction every year.

Korea’s cherry blossoms are generally arriving earlier, autumn color is trending later, and summer rain is becoming more concentrated—but no climate trend can turn one year’s date into a dependable appointment. The practical answer is to plan with a window, then switch to live observations as the season approaches.
The reason forecasts feel slippery is simple: climate change moves the baseline, while each year’s cold snaps, heat, rain and local geography still decide the exact day. Here is how to read the three seasonal signals without mistaking one unusual trip for Korea’s new normal.
The trend is real; the date still moves
A Korea Meteorological Administration analysis covering 1912–2020 found that the national annual mean temperature rose by about 0.2°C per decade. Comparing the first and most recent 30-year periods, annual precipitation increased by 135 mm while the number of precipitation days fell by 21; summer also lengthened by 20 days and winter shortened by 22. That is the long exposure. A single spring or autumn is the snapshot: a cold February can delay flowers, a warm September can hold leaves green, and one rain system can unload much of a month’s water in a few days. Both descriptions can be true at once.

Cherry blossoms: earlier overall, not earlier every year
The strongest mistake is to convert “spring is warming” into “next year will bloom earlier.” Long records point to earlier flowering, but the line zigzags. In a 2016 analysis of 147 tree species, the National Institute of Forest Science found that 1999–2015 flowering was about six days earlier on average than records from roughly 40 years before. Yet the same study found that most species flowered later during 2010–2013, when late-winter and early-spring cold interrupted the broader warming signal.
A more recent example makes the same point. The Korea Forest Service expected 2025’s spring flowering to be later than 2024 because the winter was colder. That did not cancel the long-term trend; it showed why an individual year still needs an individual forecast.
Even “Seoul has bloomed” is not a citywide switch. KMA’s seasonal observations follow designated trees and colonies using fixed rules. The agency’s data guide says observations are made at the same site and on the same individual over time so regions and years can be compared. For a many-flowered tree such as a cherry, KMA records flowering when at least three flowers are fully open on a selected branch; full bloom means at least 80% are open. Its live spring-flower page normally operates from early March through late May. Those dates describe the designated tree or colony—not every tree in the city. Treat the page as a measured reference point, then check the exact park or street you plan to visit.
Travelers already do this informally. In the 2025 r/koreatravel cherry-blossom megathread, a moderator warned that exact timing was difficult to predict; on 23 March, one report said Busan’s Namcheon road had no blooms while another showed blossoms starting in Seogwipo. Those reports are not climate evidence, but they neatly show why a national date cannot replace a local status check.
Changma: a season with blurrier edges
Changma is often translated as Korea’s monsoon or rainy season, which makes it sound like a neat block of daily rain. In practice, summer rain can arrive in bursts, pause, then return through a different weather pattern. KMA’s National Institute of Meteorological Sciences opened a formal discussion in 2022 about redefining the form and terminology of changma because the rainfall pattern had changed.
KMA analyzes changma start and end dates separately for Jeju, southern Korea and central Korea. Dates discussed during the summer can be provisional: final start and end dates are set through later seasonal analysis and can change. They are not a list of every wet or hazardous day. Heavy rain or a typhoon can occur outside the classified changma period, while dry intervals can occur inside it.
The longer climate record helps explain why the old mental picture is less useful. More precipitation combined with fewer rainy days is consistent with rain becoming more concentrated across the two 30-year periods; it does not prove that every changma will behave the same way. It also does not mean every summer will be wetter in every Korean city or make the first forecasted changma day a promise of continuous rain.

For planning, the useful question is not “Will it rain throughout my trip?” but “How much flexibility do I have if the heaviest rain lands on one or two days?” Check the short-range KMA forecast close to departure, keep one indoor day movable, and recheck flood or transport notices when heavy-rain alerts appear.
Fall color: later on average, uneven on the ground
Autumn responds differently from spring. Warm conditions can delay the cooling that drives leaves toward peak color, and elevation, tree species and exposure create visible gaps even within one mountain. The Korea Forest Service’s 2025 forecast found peak foliage about 4–5.2 days later than the previous ten-year average. In its long-term species data, the peak was moving later each year by 0.43 day for maples, 0.50 day for ginkgo and 0.52 day for oaks.

KMA’s own Seoul ginkgo observations also show why a reference tree matters. In 2020–2023, the observed start and peak were consistently later than the climatological normal, with the 2023 peak recorded 14 days late. The figure describes that station’s designated tree, not every ginkgo avenue in the capital.

A mountain forecast is similarly specific, and the agencies do not use one universal “peak.” Under KMA’s observation rules, a standard tree reaches the start of color at about 20% and peak at about 80%; famous-mountain foliage uses roughly 20% and 80% across the mountain from the summit. The Forest Service’s 2025 forecast defined peak color as at least half of the target species having changed. A red ridge, a green valley and a bare exposed slope can therefore appear in the same week without any of the observations being wrong.
How to choose dates without pretending to know the day
Start with a window, not a single peak date. If blossoms or leaves are the main reason for the trip, give yourself several days and keep more than one nearby viewing option. Korea’s south-to-north and low-to-high progression can help, but it is a planning pattern rather than a guarantee.
Then tighten the answer in three passes:
- Before booking: use long-term normals only to choose the broad part of the season. The 2025 examples in this article are historical snapshots, not promises for 2026 or 2027.
- A few weeks out: read the current KMA or Forest Service seasonal forecast and note what weather assumption and definition sit behind it.
- During the final week: use KMA’s observed status, the exact destination’s official account and recent on-the-ground photos. For changma, prioritize the short-range forecast and alerts over a seasonal date graphic.
A festival date is an organizer’s calendar, not a botanical observation. Check schedule changes, closures, ticket or refund terms, accommodation and transport conditions with the relevant provider; do not assume an event or booking will move when the flowers do. Heavy-rain, typhoon, trail and park safety notices override the sightseeing plan.
This approach may feel less satisfying than circling one perfect day, but it is much more honest. Climate tells you which way Korea’s seasonal calendar is leaning; weather and place still write the actual date.
