Korea Plug and Voltage Guide: Which Adapter Do You Need?
South Korea uses 220V, 60Hz power and Type C/F round-pin outlets. Check the INPUT line on every device before packing: most universal-voltage phone and laptop chargers need only a plug adapter, while a 120V-only hair tool must not be connected directly.

South Korea uses 220V, 60Hz power with Type C and Type F round-pin outlets. Most phone and laptop chargers need only a plug adapter if their label says INPUT 100–240V, 50/60Hz; a 110V- or 120V-only hair dryer, straightener, or other appliance must not be plugged in directly.
The decision is on the device's input label, not its USB port, brand, or country of purchase. Read that label before buying an adapter.
Start with the INPUT line
Look on the power brick, the underside of the charger, a tag on the cord, or the molded plug. Use the full voltage and frequency range exactly as printed.
- 100–240V, 50/60Hz: The device can accept Korea's supply. If its plug is not Type C or F, use a shape-only travel adapter.
- 220–240V, 50/60Hz or 220–240V, 60Hz: It can accept Korea's supply. You need an adapter only if the plug shape does not fit.
- 110V or 120V only: Do not connect it directly. Check the manufacturer's instructions for an approved voltage converter rated for the appliance, or leave the device at home.
- A dual-voltage switch: Move the switch to 220V or 240V before plugging in, following the manual. The switch is part of the device; a plug adapter does not change it for you.
If the label is missing or unreadable, search the exact model number on the manufacturer's support site. Do not infer voltage compatibility from another model that looks similar.
What Korean outlets look like
The International Electrotechnical Commission's World Plugs reference lists South Korea at 220V, 60Hz with Type C and Type F. Type C has two round pins and no grounding contacts. Type F uses two round pins plus grounding contacts on the sides of the plug and socket.
The first slide shows the ungrounded Type C plug and socket. The second shows the grounded Type F arrangement. The third is an industrial SCHUKO® example that makes the Type F side grounding contacts easy to see; a hotel wall plate will usually look simpler, but the grounding geometry is the same.
If your plug is already Type C or F and the device's voltage range includes 220V, you generally do not need a separate travel adapter. Travelers arriving with flat Type A/B pins, the British Type G plug, or the Australian/Chinese Type I plug normally need an adapter that ends in a Korean-compatible Type C or F plug.
Adapter and converter are different tools
A plug adapter changes the physical connection only. It does not reduce Korea's 220V supply to 120V.
A voltage converter or transformer changes voltage. It must be permitted by the appliance manufacturer and rated for the appliance's marked wattage. A small plastic adapter sold for travel is not a converter unless its specifications explicitly say that it converts voltage.
This distinction explains much of the conflicting advice in traveler forums. In one r/koreatravel discussion about Korean outlet voltage, commenters repeatedly had to separate “the plug fits” from “the device accepts 220V.” The useful part of that discussion is the method: read the exact label. Anecdotes about another person's dryer or adapter do not verify your model.
Phone, tablet and laptop charging
Check the wall charger or power brick, not the cable. USB-C, Lightning and micro-USB describe connectors; they do not tell you what wall voltage the charger accepts.
Many modern chargers are universal-voltage, but “many” is not a guarantee. Apple, for example, states that its USB power adapters are designed for 100V to 240V AC at 50Hz to 60Hz. That confirms those Apple adapters, not every charger in your bag.
For a charger marked 100–240V, 50/60Hz, pack one of these:
- A simple Type C/F plug adapter for your existing charger
- A multi-port USB charger whose own input label includes 220V and 60Hz
- A charger with an interchangeable Korean or European-style plug head, if the manufacturer lists it as compatible
Also check the charger's output power and supported charging protocol if you expect fast charging. Voltage compatibility keeps the charger safe to connect; it does not guarantee the fastest rate for every phone or laptop.
Hair dryers, straighteners and styling tools need more caution
Hair appliances are the devices most likely to turn a small packing mistake into a dead appliance. They often draw far more power than a phone charger, and some models are manufactured for one voltage market only.
Use this order:
- Find the exact input voltage and wattage on the appliance or its cord tag.
- If it says 100–240V or has a documented dual-voltage setting, follow the manual and use only the required plug adapter.
- If it says 110V or 120V only, do not plug it into a Korean outlet through a shape adapter.
- Use a converter only if the manufacturer permits one and the converter is rated for that exact appliance. If either point is unclear, use the accommodation's dryer or a locally compatible device instead.
Do not assume an inexpensive converter can handle a high-wattage dryer or styler. Brand and product family are not enough either: a manufacturer can sell different voltage versions of products that share the same name. For example, Dyson's guidance for using an Airwrap abroad tells owners to compare the destination's supply with the voltage range of the machine they purchased.
Korea's 60Hz frequency is normally covered by switching chargers labeled 50/60Hz. Motors, clocks, heating controls and other frequency-sensitive appliances may be different. If the label says 50Hz only, ask the manufacturer before using it on 60Hz power.
Check power strips and extension leads too
A universal-voltage laptop charger does not make the power strip around it universal. Read the strip's own voltage, current and wattage markings.
Do not bring a 125V-only strip and place a simple Type C/F adapter on its plug. The adapter changes the pins, not the strip's electrical rating. A compact multi-port charger rated for 100–240V, 50/60Hz is often a cleaner solution than adapting a home-country strip, provided its total output is enough for the devices you will charge.
What to pack
Photograph every hard-to-read input label before the trip. Then pack for the devices you have actually verified:
- At least one sturdy Type C/F travel adapter if your plugs do not already match
- A spare adapter if several people need to charge overnight
- A universal-voltage multi-port charger, if it reduces the number of wall adapters you need
- No 120V-only hair tool unless you have manufacturer-approved conversion equipment that is correctly rated
The Korea Tourism Organization's electricity guide says adapters may be available at airports, retail stores, duty-free shops and convenience stores, and that some accommodation front desks may lend or sell one. Treat that as a fallback, not a stock guarantee. Bringing a verified adapter is simpler than searching after check-in.
The packing rule is short: match the plug shape, verify 220V and 60Hz on the input label, and never treat an adapter as a converter.
