Hanbok or School-Uniform Family Photos in Korea: What to Confirm

Before you pay a deposit, get five answers in writing: which costume measurements fit each person, how long the whole appointment takes, how many photos are retouched, whether all original files are included, and whether website or social-media use is optional. Those details matter more than a package name such as “family,” “hanbok,” or “school uniform.”

A polished family portrait can hide a busy hour of dressing, settling a child, choosing poses, and changing outfits. Build the booking around the youngest child’s comfort, then make the file and privacy terms precise enough that two people would interpret them the same way.

Send this five-point checklist before paying

Ask the studio to reply in the same chat or email where you book:

1. Costumes: Which hanbok or school-uniform sizes fit each person’s height and body measurements? Are shoes, socks, hair accessories, jackets, and bags included?
2. Time: How many minutes are for shooting, and how much total time should you reserve for fitting, hair, selection, and breaks?
3. Retouching: How many final images are included, and does retouching mean color correction, skin cleanup, body or garment adjustments, or something else?
4. Files: Does “digital files included” mean selected edited JPGs, every original file, or both? What resolution, format, delivery date, and download deadline apply?
5. Public use: Can you decline use of the photos on the studio’s website, portfolio, Naver Blog, Instagram, or other promotion without changing the photo service you are buying?

If the answer is only “everything is included,” ask for counts and names. A number such as “three retouched high-resolution JPGs plus all original JPGs” is much easier to rely on.

“Kids’ sizes” is not a measurement chart

Do not book from an age label alone. Send the child’s current height plus the measurements the studio requests, and ask for the actual garment measurements or size chart. For school uniforms, confirm the shirt or blouse, vest, jacket, waist, skirt or trouser length, and shoes separately. For hanbok, ask whether the jacket and skirt or trousers can be mixed across sizes.

Provider rules vary enough that a generic promise is risky. When checked on August 13, 2026, one Seoul school-uniform rental listing published women’s sizes from XS to 4XL and men’s sizes from XS to 2XL, allowed two fitting attempts, and did not accept children under 12. That is one provider’s policy, not a Seoul-wide rule. The listing showed closed when checked, so use it only as evidence that rules vary—not as a booking recommendation. It shows why “children’s sizes available” and “family package” are not substitutes for checking the exact ages, measurements, and number of try-ons for your group.

Also ask:

• whether adults and children can coordinate colors across different size ranges;
• whether dressing and fitting count against camera time;
• what happens if the reserved costume does not fit on the day;
• whether a thin base layer is allowed or recommended; and
• whether the studio has a comfortable changing or waiting area for a young child.

A sponsored August 2026 Naver account of a baby hanbok session offers a useful, venue-specific caution: the studio reportedly had two baby sizes, but one outfit was still too large, and the child tolerated the hanbok better over a thin shirt. The same family brought snacks and a familiar toy. Treat that as one parent’s experience, not a promise from every studio.

A 30-minute shoot can take 90 minutes

Ask for shooting time and door-to-door appointment time as two separate numbers. A dated December 2024 package description from Cheese Smile Studio illustrates the difference: its self-photo example listed 30 minutes of shooting, followed by roughly 15 minutes of selection and 40 minutes of editing and printing. The total was described as about 90 minutes. Package details can change, but the time categories remain useful.

For a child, add these questions:

• Can the photographer pause for a snack, bathroom visit, or reset?
• Do breaks stop the clock or reduce the number of concepts?
• Is there an overtime fee, and when does it begin?
• Can the family start with the must-have group photo before the child tires?
• Is the studio willing to play a familiar song or let a comfort toy enter a few frames?

One recent Reddit discussion about a family hanbok shoot specifically recommended including fitting time and child-pacing breaks in the schedule. That is traveler advice rather than a contract term, so put the request into your own booking message. A realistic plan is usually better than squeezing three costume changes into the shortest package.

Decide the shot list before the child gets tired

The slider below shows three different family compositions from the same studio. Use it as a planning prompt: a formal multigenerational group, a milestone-centered portrait, and a playful frame with a prop produce different memories even before costumes enter the picture.

Send a priority order, not just a long wish list. A practical sequence is:

1. whole family;
2. children or siblings together;
3. each child with both parents;
4. grandparents with children, if present;
5. couple or solo portraits; and
6. optional playful or prop shots.

Confirm whether every grouping is included, whether extra people cost more, and how many background or costume changes the time allows. If only one frame is non-negotiable, say so. The photographer can capture it while everyone is fresh.

“Originals” and “retouched photos” are different deliverables

Korean studios may use several terms:

• 원본 전체 — all original files;
• 보정본 3장 — three retouched final images;
• 색감 보정 — color correction;
• 정밀 보정 — detailed retouching, whose exact scope still needs confirmation;
• 고화질 JPG — high-resolution JPG; and
• 웹용 JPG — a JPG prepared for web use, which may be smaller than a print file.

A useful dated example again comes from Cheese Smile Studio’s December 2024 article. Its self-photo package described two retouched sheets and a high-resolution edited JPG for web use, while its photographer package described three retouched sheets, a high-resolution edited JPG, and all original digital files. The phrase “digital file included” therefore did not mean the same file set in both examples. Verify the studio’s current package before booking.

Ask whether originals are straight from the camera or color-corrected, whether RAW files are excluded, and whether blinking or test frames are removed. For final images, ask what edits are included, how many revision requests you get, and whether additional retouched files have a per-image fee.

Then pin down delivery:

• exact number of originals and finals, or an honest estimate for originals;
• JPG, PNG, or another format;
• pixel dimensions or print size, not only “high resolution”;
• online gallery, cloud link, email, or physical storage;
• delivery date; and
• the date the download link expires.

Download the files promptly and keep two copies. If you want a large framed print, tell the studio before retouching so the crop and resolution match the intended size.

Treat promotional use as a separate decision

A photo order and permission to use an identifiable child’s portrait for marketing answer different questions. Look for wording such as SNS 업로드 동의 (consent to social-media upload), 홍보 활용 동의 (consent to promotional use), or 홈페이지 게시 (website posting). Ask whether declining that clause affects only publicity, not the shoot or delivery you purchased.

Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission announced enforcement action in February 2026 involving companies that collected or used personal information of children under 14 without a legal guardian’s consent. The case was not about family photo studios specifically, but it is a clear reason to treat a child’s identifiable promotional image carefully and to have a legal guardian handle any requested consent.

If you are willing to allow some use, define the channels, duration, whether the child’s name is shown, and how to request removal. If you do not agree, send this sentence before the session and keep the reply:

“I do not consent to promotional publication of the photos on social media, websites, blogs, or similar channels.”

Do not rely on a verbal promise if the form says the opposite. Ask staff to correct the form or add a written note that both sides can keep.

English meaning:

Before booking our family photo session, please confirm the following. My child is [age], [height] cm tall, and normally wears size [size]. Please tell me the actual measurements of a suitable hanbok or school uniform and how many fittings are allowed. How long are the shoot and the full appointment including fitting and photo selection? How many original and retouched files are included, and what are their resolution, format, delivery date, and download deadline? May my child take a short break during the shoot if needed? I do not consent to promotional publication of the photos on social media, websites, blogs, or similar channels.

A studio does not need to offer every possible benefit. It does need to describe what your package contains. Book when the costume fit is plausible, the schedule has room for the child, the file counts are specific, and the publicity choice is recorded separately.
