Why Korean Self-Checkout Stops on Alcohol and Cigarettes
The machine has reached an age-verification gate, not a payment error. Visitors usually need staff and an original passport; unmanned periods may make the sale unavailable.

When beer, soju or tobacco stops a convenience-store self-checkout, payment is only half the sale: age must be verified first. The paused screen is usually an approval checkpoint, not a broken card terminal. If ordinary items scan and the stop appears on alcohol or tobacco, treat it as an age-and-identity gate; if every payment fails or the message names the card or network, ask staff about a payment error instead. Rescanning or changing cards does not remove an age-verification gate.
The screen is asking for approval
If staff are present, leave the restricted item at the checkout, point to the notice and ask for an ID check. The employee may inspect ID and approve there or move the sale to the staffed register. Cigarettes behind the counter should be requested by brand and quantity; staff handles the product and check.

Korea’s current Youth Protection Act defines youth as under 19 while excluding a person from January 1 of the calendar year they turn 19. That is a sale-specific Youth Protection Act rule, not the Civil Act calculation of legal adulthood: the two should not be treated as interchangeable. For alcohol and tobacco, the seller must check both age and whether the person presenting the credential is the buyer, including sales through automatic or unmanned equipment. This calendar-year rule may differ from a visitor’s home rule, and the store can refuse a sale it cannot verify.
Bring the original passport for staff
For a short-term visitor, an original passport is the safest document when the purchase matters. An eligible foreign resident may also hold an original Korean residence or registration card, or the government’s official mobile foreign-resident ID, but support still depends on the staff workflow and the specific reader. A foreign driving licence, phone photo or photocopy may be refused, and acceptance can vary. This is practical guidance, not a sale guarantee: staff can decline if they cannot verify the document or match it to the buyer.
Keep one distinction clear: a passport can help a human inspect your age; it does not make a domestic kiosk authenticate foreign credentials. Do not scan a photo, copy or another person’s ID, and do not ask a companion to present their identity or pay as a way around the gate. The credential must match the buyer. Repeatedly scanning the item will not make a terminal accept a document it was never built to read.
PASS is not a visitor workaround
PASS ID Payment launched 1 December 2025 for customers who register an eligible Korean resident registration card or driving licence in PASS and add a card. The initial announcement described GS25 and Beaverworks unmanned cigarette vending and future expansion. It did not say every checkout supports it or that a foreign passport can enroll.
Look for a clearly supported PASS/age-verification interface. A service logo at the shop does not prove this particular machine supports the workflow. For most visitors, the reliable route is still staff inspection with the original passport; PASS simply explains why one adult-product machine can complete a sale while another summons staff.
Open 24 hours does not mean every product
Some 24-hour stores become unmanned or lightly staffed overnight. The named GS25 DX LAB & CAFE listing, for example, publishes an unmanned 00:00–06:00 period; that is one branch, not a chain-wide schedule. Without staff, ordinary checkout approval may be unavailable, alcohol may be locked, and cigarettes may require a dedicated verified vending machine.

“Open 24 hours” describes shop access, not guaranteed 24-hour sale of every regulated product. Check door, cabinet and terminal notices before filling the basket. A passport is not a substitute for credentials unsupported by a machine.
Use this four-step response
- Pause and read the message; separate an age-and-identity prompt from a card or network error. 2. Look for staff or a call button and show the requested original credential; do not rely on a photo or assume a foreign licence works. 3. If no staff are available, use only a clearly supported verification machine or remove the regulated item. 4. If the store cannot verify the buyer, use a staffed branch or return at a staffed time. Do not use another person’s ID, proxy payment or scan tricks to bypass the gate. Staff inspection and machine authentication are different processes, and either can end in a lawful refusal.
