When Will Icheon or Yeoju Pottery Be Fired and Delivered?

Do not expect to carry a wheel-thrown bowl out of an Icheon or Yeoju class that day. Where a studio publishes it, three to four weeks is a useful planning example—not a rule for either city. Drying, two firings, glazing, cooling, inspection and the kiln queue all sit between the class and delivery.

Why the one-hour class takes weeks

A Yeoju City example at Goryeo Pottery documents drying, an 850°C bisque firing, glazing and a 1,250°C final firing, with delivery in three to four weeks. An Icheon tourism example says around three weeks. These are studio examples. Clay body, wall thickness, glaze, kiln batching, season and failure can change the result. Painting a pre-bisqued piece removes some early work but still needs final firing unless a rapid/raku process is explicitly advertised.

Plan from your departure date

If you leave Korea inside three weeks, assume your piece will not meet your flight. A hotel is not automatically a receiver: ask in writing whether it accepts parcels for departed guests and how long it holds them. For Korean courier delivery, provide the recipient’s exact address and Korean phone number and ask whether the fee is per person, box or piece. Pickup works only after the studio sends a completion message; do not build a long return journey around an estimate.

Separate the price into five lines

Ask separately for: class; trimming/glaze/firing; pickup or Korean courier; international packing/postage; destination tax or handling. A festival’s “free wheel experience” may cover wheel time while firing/delivery remain paid. Clay shrinks, cracks and warps; ask whether kiln failure is refunded, remade, replaced or simply not delivered. The finished object is not guaranteed to match its wet shape.

Overseas shipping needs a written quote

No official program checked guarantees every country. A usable quote states destination/postal code, packed weight, dimensions, carrier, tracking, declared value and breakage policy. Korea Post prices by service and destination and may use volumetric rather than actual weight; padding and double boxing can move a small bowl into a higher bracket. Check acceptance restrictions and customs immediately before shipment. “Fragile” does not automatically create insurance coverage—ask who files, what evidence is needed and who bears courier damage.

Questions to settle before touching clay
