How to Use a Coin Noraebang for K-pop in Korea

Pay by songs or minutes, match TJ or KY song numbers, queue with 예약, use the essential controls and avoid common payment mistakes.

A coin noraebang (코인노래방) is a small karaoke booth where you usually buy songs or minutes instead of renting a large room for an hour. For a first K-pop session, remember one flow: check the machine brand and price, find that brand's song number, press 예약 to queue, then press 시작 only when you want playback to begin.

Controllers vary by model and venue. These three TJ panels show the shared ideas, not one universal layout.

The two-minute setup

  1. Check whether payment is at a hallway kiosk or inside the booth.
  2. Read whether the package is by (song) or (minute), and start with the smallest option.
  3. Find TJ or KY/금영 on the controller or opening screen.
  4. Search the exact Korean title or artist, or enter a number saved for that brand.
  5. Press 예약 to add it to the queue. Use 시작 when nothing is playing and you want it to start.
  6. Check the remaining-song or remaining-time counter, then look for your phone, wallet and bag before leaving.

Pay from the sign in front of you

Coin noraebang does not always mean coins. Some booths take bills or coins inside; others use a central kiosk that assigns a room. Card acceptance, foreign-card compatibility and mobile wallets vary. Low-denomination Korean won bills are a practical backup.

  • — song
  • — minute
  • — Korean won
  • 현금 / 카드 / 결제 — cash / card / payment
  • 남은 곡 / 남은 시간 — songs / time remaining

Prices, bonuses, packages and payment methods belong to the exact venue and can change. Read the room sign or selected kiosk option; use the assigned room number. Cash inserted in a room machine is often converted immediately, so do not expect change or an easy refund. Buy the smallest package first and add more only if the machine permits it.

Match the song number to TJ or KY

TJ Media and KY (금영/KYSing) use separate catalogs and numbers. Identify the logo before searching. Save the official TJ Media accompaniment search and KY KYSing karaoke-book search.

TJ's current page accepts title, singer, lyricist, composer and song number. It explains Korean initial-consonant search, Hangul renderings such as 아이유 for IU, and Korean-pronunciation search for Japanese and pop titles. KY separates Korean, POP and Japanese catalogs. Screenshot brand, number, title and artist together; a bare number is easy to reuse on the wrong system.

If searching on the machine, try the exact Hangul title, then the artist's Korean name, then a distinctive part of a long title. Check singer and version before queuing: original, live, MR, duet, OST and cover entries can look similar. New releases may not reach every model at once.

TJ's June 2026 company update says its systems support English menus and remotes and songs from multiple countries. That is not a promise that every coin booth has a recent model or enabled English interface. A prepared song number remains the safest shortcut.

Six buttons are enough

  • 예약 (yeyak) — reserve; add the entered song to the queue
  • 시작 (sijak) — start the entered song
  • 취소 (chwiso) — cancel or stop, depending on the current screen
  • 음정 (eumjeong) — key or pitch
  • 템포 (tempo) — speed
  • 마이크 / 에코 / 뮤직 — microphone, echo and backing-music levels

Use 예약 while another song is playing. Pressing 시작 can interrupt the flow. Treat 취소 carefully: it may erase entered digits, remove a reservation or stop playback. Read any confirmation; a started track may still count. Adjust pitch one step at a time and leave tempo at default unless you deliberately want a different speed.

Score, sound and comfort

A score is a game, not a vocal assessment, and differs by model or mode. If you paid by song, wait for the interface to return; if you paid by time, the clock may continue during the score animation depending on the venue. A perfect score does not guarantee a free song. Trust only the displayed remaining counter or an explicit 서비스 bonus.

Use a fresh microphone cover if supplied. Test at speaking volume because a small booth becomes painfully loud quickly. For feedback, move the microphone away from the speaker and lower microphone or echo. Keep drinks off the controller and follow the venue's food, drink and smoking rules.

Small booths can be warm, tight or reached only by stairs. Check the room before paying if you need step-free access, ventilation, luggage space or gentler lighting. For a short set, sing an easy mid-range track first, the must-sing K-pop title second, a group chorus next and the high-note challenge last. Let one person manage the queue.

Before leaving, inspect the seat, shelf, floor, charging area and microphone tray. If payment does not add songs or time, photograph the screen and room number and contact staff before paying again.
