Haeundae Before the Crowds: Beach, Dongbaekseom and Market

Haeundae feels most spacious before breakfast. Start on the beach around 06:00–06:30, walk west through Dongbaekseom, then return east to Haeundae Traditional Market after its 09:00 opening; allow about 2.5–3 hours and roughly 3.5–4 km, depending on how much of the island loop you follow.

The return from Dongbaekseom to the market deliberately retraces part of the waterfront because the market is not a dawn stop. Google Maps may not calculate this Korean multi-stop walk; use the pins for order and open the same three stops in Naver Map for live pedestrian directions.

1. Haeundae Beach — take in the full arc before the day begins

Begin on the broad central stretch of Haeundae Beach. The official overview makes the 1.5 km curve easy to understand, while a local morning diary photographed the promenade just after 06:20 with only a few walkers in view.

• Access: Public beachfront; no admission fee
• Highlight: Face the sea, then turn right and walk west toward the Westin Josun and Dongbaekseom
• Stay: 30–40 minutes for the sand, promenade, and first light
• Good to know: Runners and walkers are already out around 06:00, but the beach still feels far calmer than it does later in the day

2. Dongbaekseom — use the outdoor trail while the buildings are still secondary

The coastal boardwalk is the point of this stop: pine shade, open-water views, and the Haeundae skyline appearing behind you. The Princess Hwangok Mermaid Statue is a useful landmark on the sea-facing side; Nurimaru APEC House is worth seeing from outside, but do not plan the early route around indoor access.

• Highlight: Follow the water-facing boardwalk rather than the vehicle road
• Stay: 45–60 minutes for the coastal side and main viewpoints
• Good to know: Expect stairs and rolling wooden sections; after rain, slow down on the decking

3. Haeundae Traditional Market — arrive when breakfast is actually possible

Walk back east beside the beach, then turn inland toward Gunam-ro. The market is about five minutes from the beach, but its official opening time is 09:00, so the island loop is what makes the timing work.

• Hours: 09:00–22:00 year-round; individual shops can vary (checked 13 Aug 2026)
• Highlight: Choose a stall that is visibly open for noodle soup, pork-and-rice soup, twisted bread, or tteokbokki
• Stay: 30–45 minutes
• Good to know: At 09:00, the lane wakes up unevenly; avoid building the whole morning around one specific stall

Before you go

• Check the local sunrise and rain forecast the night before. First light shifts substantially by season, and the beach has little shelter.
• Wear shoes with grip for Dongbaekseom. The route is easy at a conversational pace, but it is not a flat promenade all the way.
• If you want the quietest version, keep the beach stop short and spend the extra time on the island; the market should still be last.
