Dokdo Ferry Tours: Arrival Still May Not Mean Landing

Dokdo ferries face two separate decisions: whether to sail from Ulleungdo and whether it is safe to berth at Dongdo. Plan a buffer, carry accepted original ID and prepare for a circuit tour.

A Dokdo reservation is a chance to sail, not a promise that you will step ashore. The ferry may be cleared to leave Ulleungdo and still be unable to berth at Dongdo when it arrives. Treat departure and landing as two separate decisions, and build the day so either outcome still works.

Two decisions, made at different moments

The first call is whether the ferry can depart Ulleungdo. The second comes near Dokdo, when the crew assesses the sea beside the pier and the vessel’s condition. Weather at your hotel, a successful morning departure or a high forecast percentage does not settle that second call.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs visitor guidance says Dokdo is reached via Ulleungdo and that operating times, fares and ports can change. Ulleung County’s docking forecast is useful for planning, but the county labels it as reference information rather than a landing guarantee. Follow the operator and crew on the day.

If landing is important, book the Dokdo trip early in a multi-night Ulleungdo stay. A spare day creates another possible booking window; it does not create a right to transfer, a vacant seat or better weather. Check the ticket’s departure port and check-in deadline the evening before, then confirm operations again that morning.

What a tourist landing actually includes

For ordinary sightseeing, the public area is the Dongdo pier—not a hiking circuit around the islets. The Ulleung County Dokdo Office currently limits a landing to 470 people and says regular tourist sailings are generally planned around March 15 to November 15. That period is a reference only: each carrier decides its actual dates in response to local conditions.

Time on the pier is short. One current operator advertises a four-hour round trip including about 30 minutes of sightseeing, but the crew controls the actual stop. Keep your return instructions in mind as soon as you disembark, take priority photos first and remain within the marked visitor area.

Wear shoes with grip and keep your hands free. The concrete can be wet, the wind can be sharper than on Ulleungdo, and there is little value in bringing a large bag through a brief exit-and-reboarding sequence. Drones and access beyond the public pier require separate approvals; a tourist ticket is not permission.

Carry the document your carrier accepts

Reservation details and identity are checked for coastal-ferry travel. Foreign passengers should carry their original valid passport or another document the carrier has explicitly confirmed it accepts. Do not rely on a phone photo, photocopy or a document named by an old blog. Enter passenger names exactly as required and ask the carrier in advance if your document or child’s documentation is unusual.

Arrive by the carrier’s stated deadline. Schedules, ports, vessels, fares and fuel surcharges can change, so the issued confirmation and same-day notice outrank a saved timetable. Keep accommodation plans flexible on Ulleungdo if a cancellation could affect a mainland connection.

Prepare for the whole voyage, not only the photo stop

The crossing is long enough for motion sickness to develop before Dokdo is visible. If you are susceptible, ask a pharmacist or clinician about an appropriate option before travel and follow its instructions. The CDC Yellow Book explains that preventive medicine is most useful before exposure, while some products cause drowsiness or are unsuitable for certain travelers.

When permitted, look at the horizon, avoid reading or scrolling, minimize head movement and avoid the bow, where motion can be strongest. Sleep loss and alcohol can worsen the experience. Keep water and a sickness bag close, and obey the crew when decks or aisles are closed.

If the landing becomes a circuit tour

A current carrier page explicitly says weather can change a landing into a sail-around tour. That means remaining aboard and viewing Dokdo from the water; an outside deck is available only if the crew opens it. It is not evidence that the captain “did not try,” and passengers should never pressure crew to berth in unsafe conditions.

Before payment, read the seller’s cancellation, circuit-tour, refund and rebooking terms. A departure canceled at Ulleungdo, a vessel that returns early and a completed circuit tour are different events and may be treated differently. Save the confirmation and ask the seller—not another traveler—what applies to your booking.

Plan the day as a voyage to see Dokdo. Landing on Dongdo is the exceptional bonus that the sea and crew must still approve.
