Do You Need K-ETA for Korea in 2026? The Official Check

The answer is tied to the passport you will actually use, not where you live or where your flight starts. Open the official Korean government K-ETA site, run that passport through the official flow, and trust the result shown there. As rechecked on August 12, 2026, the temporary exemption for the countries and regions already covered runs through December 31, 2026, Korea Standard Time; it is not a blanket exemption for every visa-free traveler.

Ask these questions in order:

1. Are you entering without a Korean visa? K-ETA is for eligible short visa-free visits. It does not replace a work, study or long-stay visa.
2. Is the exact passport eligible? Search its issuing country or region on the K-ETA Eligible Countries / Applicants page. Residence, departure airport and a second nationality you will not use do not decide the result.
3. Does the application flow say “K-ETA Exempt”? Begin the official application flow and scan the passport information page. The 2026 extension notice says a traveler covered by the temporary exemption will see that message. If it appears for the passport and entry date you will use, do not pay unless you deliberately choose a voluntary application.

Eligibility to apply and a temporary exemption are different layers. A passport can appear on the eligible list while its holder is temporarily excused from obtaining approval. That distinction is why a copied country list is an unreliable final answer.

Use the same passport for the check, airline booking or document check, and Korean entry process. If you hold two nationalities, do not mix the result for one passport with travel on the other.

Read the result this way

• The official flow shows “K-ETA Exempt”: approval is not required under the current exemption for that trip. Stop before payment unless a voluntary application has a clear benefit for you.
• The passport is eligible and no exemption appears: you generally need approval before boarding for a short visa-free visit.
• The passport is not eligible: K-ETA is not the route. Check the visa requirement with the Korean embassy or consulate responsible for that passport and purpose.
• You have a valid Korean visa or Residence Card: that status takes priority. Do not treat K-ETA as a substitute or a way to extend the permitted stay.

K-ETA is not a visa and approval does not guarantee admission. A Korea Immigration Service officer makes the final entry decision.

What the 2026 extension does—and does not—change

The Ministry of Justice extended the existing temporary exemption from January 1 through December 31, 2026 KST. It kept the already covered countries and regions exempt for one more year. It did not announce that every nationality eligible for visa-free entry had become exempt.

The cleanest check is therefore the live passport flow, not a screenshot or a friend’s result. Recheck before travel, particularly for an entry near year-end or after a passport change.

Cases that change the answer

The current official eligibility guidance identifies several common exceptions:

• Age: travelers aged 17 or younger and 65 or older are exempt from applying. Check age for the date of entry.
• Transfer: a passenger staying airside may fall under the transfer exception. If the itinerary requires Korean immigration, baggage collection, an airport change or an overnight landside stay, check entry eligibility separately.
• Visa or residence status: valid visa holders and registered foreign residents use those documents as their primary status.
• New passport: an approval does not transfer to a reissued passport. Apply again when the passport changes, even if the old approval has time left.
• Changed travel information: if the approval remains valid but the purpose, Korean address, contact details, dates or accompanying travelers change, update the travel information in the official portal.

For a diplomatic or official passport, military status, ABTC, crew duty, prior residence card or another nonstandard case, use the official K-ETA Ask Us form. An airline forum answer is not a determination for your document.

If K-ETA is required, do not wait for the airport

The official K-ETA application guide requires approval before boarding. Assessment usually takes 72 hours or less, but the site warns that it can take longer and offers no expedited service. “Usually” is not a deadline guarantee; apply with a real buffer.

Prepare the valid passport, an email address, an acceptable face photo and a payment method enabled for overseas online transactions. The government fee is KRW 10,000 per person, plus a separate online payment fee, and is non-refundable even if approval is refused.

Voluntary K-ETA versus the free e-Arrival Card

A temporarily exempt traveler may still apply and pay voluntarily. One stated benefit is not having to submit an arrival card. That benefit now has a practical alternative: travelers who must declare entry can submit Korea’s official e-Arrival Card free of charge from three days before arrival. A holder of valid K-ETA is excluded from that declaration.

So do not pay for voluntary K-ETA merely because a reseller implies that an arrival form is difficult or paid. First use the official e-Arrival Card navigator to see whether you must file. The arrival declaration and entry authorization are different tasks: a free e-Arrival Card does not replace a K-ETA that is actually required.

If you already have approval

Current approvals can be used for multiple entries for up to three years, or until the linked passport expires if earlier. Applications submitted before July 3, 2023 had a two-year validity rule. Validity is separate from the visa-free stay allowed on each visit.

Check the passport number rather than relying on an old confirmation email. A reissued passport requires a new application. The official guide also requires a new application after changes to criminal-record or infectious-disease information. Ordinary travel details are updated through the travel-information function instead.

Avoid paid look-alike sites

The official domain is k-eta.go.kr. Search ads and agency pages can imitate government design while charging far more than KRW 10,000. An agency fee does not buy faster government assessment or guaranteed approval.

Before uploading a passport scan or face photo, check the complete domain. If a page promises instant approval, hides the operator or asks for a much higher fee, close it and reopen the official K-ETA portal.

Use this final rule: visa holders follow the visa, exempt travelers stop before payment, required travelers apply early, and everyone rechecks with the passport they will actually carry.
