5 Seoul Cafés by Neighborhood: Choose the Right Atmosphere

Choose the right Seoul café by neighborhood: a 1920s hanok in Anguk, a bamboo garden in Ikseon-dong, an Euljiro alley, historic Daehangno, or a former factory in Hapjeong.

Choose the neighborhood first. Café Onion Anguk, Cheongsudang, and Coffee Hanyakbang can form one central-Seoul route; Hakrim Dabang belongs with a Daehangno day, and Anthracite Hapjeong is better saved for western Seoul. Trying to collect all five in one day turns a café guide into a cross-city commute.

Each place earns its stop for a different reason: a 1920s hanok, a bamboo courtyard, an Euljiro alley, Seoul’s long-running dabang culture, or a former shoe factory. Use the quick choice below to pick the atmosphere that fits the rest of your day.

Which Seoul café should you choose?

  • Palaces and a hanok: Café Onion Anguk, 69 m from Anguk Station Exit 3 according to VISITKOREA.
  • Ikseon-dong and a garden setting: Cheongsudang, built around bamboo, moss, water, and a renovated hanok courtyard.
  • Euljiro and hand-drip coffee: Coffee Hanyakbang, hidden in a narrow passage beside its dessert partner Hyaemindang.
  • Daehangno, theater, and old Seoul: Hakrim Dabang, operating since 1956 near Hyehwa Station.
  • Hapjeong or Mangwon and industrial design: Anthracite Hapjeong, which retains elements of the shoe factory that once occupied the building.

Opening hours, last orders, and temporary closures can change. Check the exact branch in Naver Map or the venue’s official channel on the day you visit; the addresses and place details below were rechecked on August 11, 2026.

Map: compare the five neighborhoods

The map keeps the same order as this guide:

  1. Café Onion Anguk — Anguk
  2. Cheongsudang — Ikseon-dong
  3. Coffee Hanyakbang — Euljiro
  4. Hakrim Dabang — Daehangno
  5. Anthracite Coffee Hapjeong — Hapjeong

Treat this as an orientation map, not a route to complete. The first three sit in the wider Jongno–Euljiro area. Hakrim is north in Daehangno, while Anthracite is well west in Hapjeong.

1. Café Onion Anguk: choose it for a palace morning

Café Onion Anguk occupies a hanok dating to the 1920s. The renovation preserved the open wooden daecheongmaru hall and madang courtyard, so the building—not only the bread and coffee—is the reason to visit.

  • Exact branch: 어니언 안국 (Onion Anguk)
  • Address: 5 Gyedong-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul
  • Best fit: before or after Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, or another palace-area stop
  • Decision point: choose it when sitting in a hanok matters more than finding a quiet, low-traffic café

VISITKOREA lists vanilla bean latte as a signature drink and pandoro and salty butter bread among the popular baked items. Menus can change, so use those as orientation rather than a guaranteed order.

2. Cheongsudang: choose it for Ikseon-dong’s garden design

Cheongsudang was created from a disused hanok. Its operator describes a courtyard rebuilt as a bamboo grove with a running stream, plus an interior where water, plants, moss, and live fish share the room.

  • Exact branch: 청수당 베이커리 (Cheongsudang Bakery), Ikseon-dong
  • Address: 31-9 Donhwamun-ro 11na-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul
  • Best fit: an Ikseon-dong walk, especially when the setting and photographs are part of the plan
  • Decision point: the garden is highly staged and seating views vary; visit for the complete space, not for one guaranteed photo angle

The entrance is in Ikseon-dong’s narrow lane network. Search the Korean branch name when you are close rather than relying only on a street-number pin.

3. Coffee Hanyakbang: choose it for an Euljiro alley break

Coffee Hanyakbang is tucked into the older alleyways of Euljiro. Dark wood, close-set rooms, vintage furniture, and hand-drip coffee make it a slower stop than the brighter courtyard cafés. Hyaemindang, its paired dessert shop, bakes cakes and pastries.

  • Exact branch: 커피한약방 (Coffee Hanyakbang)
  • Address: 16-6 Samil-daero 12-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul
  • Best fit: an Euljiro walk or a move south from Ikseon-dong
  • Decision point: the final passage is easier to find with the Korean name in a live map; do not expect a wide storefront on the main road

The official site’s company address is not the customer entrance used in this guide. Navigate to the café branch at 16-6 Samil-daero 12-gil, and confirm the live pin before setting out.

4. Hakrim Dabang: choose it for Daehangno and old Seoul

Hakrim Dabang has operated on Daehak-ro since 1956. Seoul’s official tourism guide connects it with generations of university students and people in music, art, theater, and literature; its LPs, paintings, and wooden interior still carry that history.

  • Exact branch: 학림다방 (Hakrim Dabang)
  • Address: 2F, 119 Daehak-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul
  • Best fit: before or after a Daehangno performance or a Hyehwa-area walk
  • Decision point: the café is on the second floor; include the stairs and possible wait in your plan if mobility or luggage is a concern

Visit Seoul lists Hyehwa Station Exit 3 about 100 m away. Keep Hakrim with a Daehangno day instead of forcing it into an Anguk–Euljiro café run.

5. Anthracite Hapjeong: choose it for industrial space and western Seoul

Anthracite Coffee Roasters’ Hapjeong branch occupies a former shoe factory and retains many of its industrial elements. Concrete, old machinery, weathered surfaces, and a restrained interior give it a different rhythm from the hanok cafés.

  • Exact branch: 앤트러사이트 합정점 (Anthracite Hapjeong)
  • Address: 10 Tojeong-ro 5-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul
  • Best fit: a Hapjeong, Sangsu, or Mangwon afternoon
  • Decision point: cross the city for the neighborhood and the roastery atmosphere, not for a quick fifth stop after Jongno

Visit Seoul notes house-roasted coffees and on-site pastries, but the available selection can vary. Decide on the branch first; check the live menu only when the visit is fixed.

Build a café day without rushing it

For the most efficient first route, start at Onion Anguk and choose one second café: Cheongsudang if you want to remain in hanok lanes, or Coffee Hanyakbang if you are continuing into Euljiro. Adding both can work when cafés are the day’s main purpose, but queues and photography make timing unpredictable.

Save Hakrim for Hyehwa and Anthracite for the Hapjeong–Mangwon side of Seoul. That split produces three useful café plans instead of one exhausting checklist:

  • Palace and hanok: Onion Anguk + Cheongsudang
  • Jongno to Euljiro: Onion Anguk or Cheongsudang + Coffee Hanyakbang
  • Separate neighborhood days: Hakrim with Daehangno; Anthracite with Hapjeong or Mangwon

If you are moving after hotel checkout, leave your suitcase before entering the alleys and upstairs cafés. Find a nearby Delivery Spot luggage location once your route is fixed.

Order before taking extended photographs, keep other guests out of the frame, and do not block courtyards, stairs, or narrow passages. A carefully designed café is still a working hospitality space.
